Hi All,
I have just put a deposit down on a blonde spotted python which i'll be picking up mid january. I have a couple questions in regards to heating the enclosure and the temperature to have it set at, everyone i seem to askgives me a different temp. I have the small plastic enclosure which i have been told will be good for atleast 12 months, i am going to cover the bottom with aspen, i have a small heat mat under the tank. my question is with the thermometer is it best to read the temp from the bottom of the tank or at the top of the aspen?
Also would getting a thermostat be the most ideal option?
is there anything you would reccomend to a first time snake owner?

Found thread

There was a really good thread on what's needed for a new snake someone may be able to help you with a link or name as I can't remember what it was called.
Just found it
1st snake check list.. Making sure I didn't miss anything. (Is the name of the thread).
Sorry I don't know how to make it a link.

Thanks gonemad, i'll check it out. i've got all the setup, just trying to confirm all the specifics

Aim for the hotspot to be around 32-34 degrees, try and get a temp. reading inside the enclosure where the snake will be basking and yes it is best to have a thermostat especially if you are starting out.

The thread you want is found here
Is called tips for newbies.
You'll find most of your answers there.

Be carefull with heat mats and plastic enclosures I learnt the hard way, they can melt a lot easier than you would think.

You will definately need a Thermostat, especially with a HeatMat.
Set up your tub and heating a few days before getting your Python, so you will have the temps perfect when he/she arrives.

A thermometer is needed. And make sure to research everything about the species. Talk to experts ect. Ive been researching stuff since August, ive taken a few courses to help me and i still havent gotten my first snake.

What is the wattage of the heat mat? If it is around 30 watt or less it wont melt the enclosure. I kept my hatchie spotted on an 8 watt until 6 months old and then on a 30watt from then till now (she's almost a year).

Good luck with yours! Soon you'll have a collection of snakes! (It is VERY addicting)

I'm pretty sure the one I had was about 15 watts and it did melt the plastic, not right through but it warped it a bit. This was before I bought a thermostat, rookie error I know . Now all my tanks have thermostats.

I would stick the thermostat on the bottom of the tank so its secure and can't move and the thermometer where the snake would usually bask/rest itself on the hot spot. Thermometers are essential as it gives u a more accurate reading and therefore can adjust the thermostat if need be. Hope this helps :)

Thanks everyone, the heat mat i have im pretty sure is a 14 watt one, its basically the size of a mouse pad. i currently have the tank sitting around 1/4 of an inch off the ground cause sitting directly on the mat the temps got upwards of 36 degrees. i think the safest opton is to get a thermostat, that way it gives me peace of mind regardless of the temperature of the day. is room temp ok for the cool side of the tank?
