Just wondering on what breed of snake i should get as my first snake, i was thinking Black & Gold Jungle python before i found out they were an aggressive breed. I was thinking of handling quite a bit, at least once or twice a day (obviously not when there shedding, eaten ect) but after reading the stickyed thread Im worried that this might not be possible. But when i thought about it there has to be some breeds calmer then others, does it depend on the parent snakes? or if you handle it a lot at a young age? whats the go?
Thanks
Joe

It depends on the individual. True, Jungles are generally snappy, but its not hard to find a docile one. Just choose any species you like the look of, and just make sure you get a docile individual. Often it depends on handling from a young age, but some individuals are born agro and nothing will change that.

Thanks for the quick response guys, I was just reading the thread about how much a bite hurts, and im not that really worried about the bites. I think moosenoose is probably right :p

Agreed - I originally wanted a Jungle, but was scared off them due to people's comments about them being snappy and aggressive. Have a Jungle hatchy now................ and couldn't be happier.

You could get what people class as the most docile breed of snake......... and get a snappy one that spends it's days being cranky, or you could get a good juvi Jungle (meet and greet before you buy so you know what you're getting) and you end up with a great handling snake that is exactly what you wanted :)

There are some breeds that are more placid and better to handle than other I find coastals are amounst the best if you want to handle everyday then again any hatchie will be a bit snappy at first untill they get to know you bredli are good as well as darwins

And so are diamonds, MD's, Jungles, Roughies, spotteds, childrens, stimsons, Womas, BHP's and olives - your point? :?

Ive found Diamonds to be the best but it really does depend how often theyre handled. Woma's, BHP's and Murrays are usually lovely too if you get them from juvies. But Ive seen some really placid jungles too, crazy around feed time but definitely very handlable and are definitely a great looking python. It all comes down to your confidence and perseverence :) Do check about parents as I have found this does often make a difference.

Get whatever you like. The learning curve then follows..

Best thing is to go with what you really want, not something second best because someone told you its better... I have coastals, costal x jungles, murray darling, darwin, and childrens python, all are fantastic handlers except the childrens, she's a bit feisty, and the jungle x coastals were also a bit temperamental for the first couple of weeks after I brought them home but are wonderful now... Im picking up my first jungle next week and cant wait :)

would not go for a spotteds, childrens, stimsons as they seem to get agressive with age, diamond python with good research as amazing snake awsome to handle

My friend owns two 7 year old stimsons and one diamond. The stimmies handle great and the diamond is a complete ******.
My spotteds docile too, so you cant generalise.

i just hear that from alot of breeders i talk too and i know all my adult stimmys and blond macs are agressive and thats 8 of them lol, all my diamonds are amazing you almost start to trust them way to much, i would go a jungle over spotteds, stimmies any day for temper, answer this qestion it really comes down to the snakes its self

Get a coastal :D

My first python was a Bredli, my mate who has dealt with them before said for me not to get one as they are aggresive. I bought one any way, for the first couple of months it would snap and bite every time I went to handle it. Now days it is one of the friendliest snakes, loves to get out for a wander.

When I bought the Bredli the bloke said don't get a Woma, as he had one and couldn't touch it as it would bite and latch on. So my next snake was a Woma, he is an angel to the point where he feeds like a well trained dog (Gently takes the food off the tongs). Everyday when I come home from work he is sitting at the glass waiting for me to let him out. We also have a Childrens Python that has never snapped or been aggressive.

We are looking at buying a Diamond tomorrow, and if it's snappy then I'll handle it like my others until they get use to human touch. Buy what you like, and don't be worried if you have to break them in a little and just be patient.

Sutto
