Thanks everyone but after thinking about it and discussing it with the missus we believe that we would not be able to give him 100% when I return to work from the Christmas break. Also for us at the moment to have a permanent 2.1m x 2.0m is not possiable with the backyard being redone. It would be unfair for him. Maybe next year we might look at it again.
But since I have the paper work filled out for the licence I will be submitting it and I will be looking in to a Blue Tounge due to being able to keep him inside, a smaller enclosure to clean and my daughter loves her reptiles.
Anyway it is going to be sad to see him go but I will always have the escaped crickets to remind me of him (I can hear one now).

you dont need a license for a blue tongue.
well it depends what your getting...
if youur going to go to the trouble of gettign a license.
id say get a bearded dragon. they grow to a similar size to a blue tongue once fully grown. but grow a lot slower so you want need to upgrade to a larger enclosure as soon. but its up to you.

or a pygmy bearded dragon
or a central netted dragon
something along those lines...

Don't know vic laws but in nsw you need a lic to keep ELT is it different in Vic?

found this guy in my kitchen 10 mins ago - seems he has a taste for leftovers lol

there are hundreds of these guys around the house, so I don't need to keep water dragons, they keep themselves in this place hehehe

I didn't even check before I answered if I did need a licence for a blu tounge. I have started going to a new reptial store for items for my eastern longneck turtle and they metioned a blue tounge to start off with my daughter in mind.

In Vic you can keep a ELN wihtout a licence, but when I doubled checked the DSE has it down a Tortoise, not a Turtle (Chelodina Longicollis).

And Mahem, wish my kitchen was like that.

Anyway varanid_mikes has taken the EWD which was sad (my daughter cracked it when he drove away) but we have been bitten by the reptile bug so now what..... EWD to big of an permanment enclosure for the moment, next year.........
Now we are discussing a blue tounge or a bearded. We are mainly looking about teaching our daughter how to care for and look after reptiles since she loves them so much (told her she could have a reptile birthday party for her 5th and she was squealing for an hour).
Anyway this post has been in the making for a couple of hours and my daughter just went to bed asking for lizzy back :(.

Anyway once again thanks for everyones opions and comments it has been helpfull and this forum has a wealth of knowladge and I will be staying a member for when we get our new reptile.

You can keep Water Dragons inside in an enclosure.
I keep all mine that way.

If you've got room for a 4' aquarium, then you've got room for a couple of beardies if you want them. Heaps of ventilation, no humidity, lots of light and bob's your uncle. Blueys are great lizards too, but beardies are a bit more active.
Sorry to hear that your daughter is missing Lizzy. Whichever way you go regarding your next lizard, I'm sure you'll enjoy its company. Cheers,
Nic

nicman72, I have worked out 4 spots where I could put a 4 foot tank, so basiclaly I have another 3 spots for differnet setups in the future.
bradman, When varanid_mike picked him up he didn't correct me for saying EWD. So the only one with experiance would be varanid_mike to say yes it was or no it's not.
