hey all,
my dad and i have had a good long talk about stuff and hes said afew of the things that he wants...some of the stuff that we have both agreed on are:

diamonds
murray darlings
jungles
womas
roughies
stimsons - 3 of the snake ranch forms
spotteds

yea he said we should have at least a breeding pair of each of them but he said he isn't going to just go off an buy all of it and he said we should start off small and buy the smaller stuff to get experience with them and get the money from them to get better then move on etc etc...

Question:
what would you start off with as a good investment to learn to breed, incubate get feeding etc thats not to expensive (for a 13 year old kid) appart from childrens and spotteds...???

Cheers,

Luke

Hey mate,
Murry darlings would be a best choice if not including antaresia. There meant to be placid and I've heard juvi's are pretty easy to feed etc. Jungles/diamonds would be a little hard with DPS and jugnles being snappy and a little harder to feed.

i would say jungles or md
i have some palmerston jungles and they are such stunning snakes, although jungles arnt usually recommended as a beginner snake.
but if u didnt want to get bitten all the time, i would defintely go the MD's

I've never bred anything reptile related in my life mate, but I've read M/D's are fairly good for that sort of thing and i would say the same about the stimmi's.

is there really alot of money in breeding snakes. i want to breed my diamond next season to fund a pair of bhp's. Then breed them to get a pair of albino carpets, and so on. is it really that simple?

Get the ones you like the most. That way you'll have lots of patience for getting them upto size, all the failed breeding attempts and getting the mongrel things to hatch.

Not unless you have something everyone else doesn't or have a large customer base.

but would there be enough money to fund a pair of bhp's? then breed diamond & bhp's to fund albino's?

Yes, if you can sell/trade your way up. There is no point in breeding a dozen BHPs worth $1000 each if you have no one to sell them too.

Probably not, you have to reaslise theres food and rats can be like 10dollars a rat and if you have so many pairs it adds up, then theres thermo's enclosures, tubs rack systems etc. It's not as easy as just pairing it up. Then what do you do if you can't find ppl to buy?

yeah true. just been thinking a bit about it. not being greedy, i would be prepared to sell bhp's for about 700 or so. (just to get rid of them a bit quicker) and if you were to breed albino's, maybe have 20 a clutch and sell them for 1500. there's 30k. just my thoughts, keen to get other opinions.

 I'll buy the albino's and bhp if you going to sell that cheap  in the end when people say that they seem to end up selling for more.

yeah, but to me, thats still 30k! thats a lot of money for a quick sale. and true, you have the cost of feeding, heating and all that. but not that much compared to profit.

IMO Breeding like that and selling cheap is only going to de-value the snakes in question.... for example if you have 2 dogs valued at 1000 each, breed them and sell the pups for 600 each to get the money to buy some thing else you want then other people are going to do the same and eventually that particular breed of dogs is going to be as common as the rest.
Dont get me wrong the prices you are using as an example would make me want to buy them as they are cheaper but are they of great quality??? I know what you are trying to achieve and its all great in theory but make sure that the end result is going to be of good quality stock and you are able to find homes for them.

go with stimsons, they are small and you dont need as much room to house them , you wont have any probs off loading hatchies, and they are easy to handle, a great beginners snake, once you learn about all the necessities about cooling and incubbation timing and temps and techniques that work for you, then you will be more confident on trying something a little more advanced (jungles , diamonds) i would keep roughies for a little down the track.
but hey thats an exciting step for you, i wish you all the best.

i understand what your saying, and it makes sense. :)
i haven't even breed my diamond yet, have a lot to learn. i've had my male diamond for 2 yrs, and can't wait to get more.
how do you make good quality stock.

He wants whats on the list..

He asks: what would you start off with as a good investment to learn to breed, incubate get feeding etc thats not to expensive (for a 13 year old kid) appart from childrens and spotteds...???
