true! but they said their view has not changed. I just wanted to know where they stood really. I did intend on voting green until this topic was posted.

Lol - Nice plug ;):p

Notice they're politically opposed?!! I doubt they would do much towards implementation themselves after the election, but perhaps they'd be slightly more agreeable to the advances of private keepers... like in the submission of a report requesting a new species added to the list.

BTW Cerion - good onya and thanks for making that call and sharing it here. Much appreciated.

Not a plug! I thought politicians were there to answer questions from the public. If you want to know ask the member. Not just accept what you are fed by the press.

usually its the uneducated that take extremest measures. Pack of idiots I reckon.

I know it wasn't a plug mate, hence the smileys - I thought they solved anything!!! I know sarcasm doesnt translate too well in writing, but I keep doing it :(

Someone should call the other party - what are they called again, the ones in power? - and ask them what they think. Just to get both sides of the coin.

:p

I went digging on the (federal) Greens web site for the fine print and it does not seem to support what is stated on the NSW web site:

from: http://www.greens.org.au/ploneprint/allpolicies.pdf

(9.3.7 Is where is the paragraph dealing with companion animals.)

Greens said:
9. Animals
Animals are now exploited on an unprecedented scale and with unprecedented intensity. Much of this exploitation is driven by current economic policy and results in abuse of animal welfare.
It includes new technologies for mass production of animal-based food, footwear, clothing andpharmaceuticals, and luxury commodities such as cosmetics and furs. The ongoing modification of land for human use and animal farming has consequences for both domesticated animals and wildlife, as has the corresponding demand for new techniques of
controlling wildlife competing with domesticated animals for resources. While all States and Territories have either legislation preventing cruelty to animals or protecting their welfare, there is no comparable, overarching and effective national animal welfare legislation, and this lack is evident in the treatment meted out to non-human animal species.
9.1 Specific Principles
The Australian Greens believe that:
9.1.1 animals have intrinsic value, separate from the needs of humans who have a consequent responsibility to ensure that animals? rights are respected
9.1.2 we have a duty of care to minimise cruelty resulting from human activity and maximise the quality of life for all animals
9.1.3 there is a need to ensure native animals and their habitats are protected and cared for.
9.2 Specific Goals
The Australian Greens aim to:
9.2.1 protect the welfare, and restore and extend the natural habitat, of native animals
9.2.2 ensure the most humane and effective means available are used when control of introduced animals is sought, and develop humane population management methods such as fertility control
9.2.3 end cruel control methods wherever possible
9.2.4 replace animal testing with alternative methods and provide funding incentives for the use and development of alternatives
9.2.5 ensure the care of all animals is adaptive and able to respond to new information
9.2.6 improve community understanding of the impacts of certain consumer choices on animal welfare and on the environment
9.2.7 ban the use of the poison 1080 targeted at native animals.
9.3 Short Term Targets
The Australian Greens will:
9.3.1 develop Commonwealth animal welfare legislation that prohibits all cruel acts and practices and ensures that such acts are treated as crimes
9.3.2 review cruelty to animals legislation with a view to enhancing the powers of regulators to include, for example, the power of seizure
9.3.3 develop a national, legally enforceable code of practice to protect the welfare of agricultural animals, including conditions of transport and captivity
9.3.4 work with the States and Territories to review other codes of practice relating to agricultural animals and aquaculture
9.3.5 prohibit all Australian livestock exports for consumption
9.3.6 develop regulations to restrict commercial fishing in Australian waters that results in trapping or prolonged suffering of non-target species
9.3.7 develop a legislated national code of conduct for the benefit of companionanimals that:
encourages responsible ownership through companion animal registration
requires the fertility of companion animals to be controlled
places restrictions on the selective breeding of animals for characteristics thatare harmful to themselves or others
prohibits the cosmetic mutilation of companion animals
9.3.8 ban the use or display of wild animals in circuses
9.3.9 develop legislated national codes for animals used in entertainment and sport that ensures they are treated without cruelty and their welfare needs are fully met
9.3.10 promote, and eventually require, an end to all medical, military, veterinary and industrial research using animals as experimental objects except where absolutely necessary for vital health research
9.3.11 immediately ban toxicology tests, such as LD50 tests, involving animals as experimental objects
9.3.12 ban genetic engineering involving animals, including cloning
9.3.13 actively promote a national consumer labelling system that identifies products that are ?cruelty free?
9.3.14 ban the importation of animal products produced by methods which do not accord with Australian standards
9.3.15 strengthen Australian support for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) ban on the importation of products from animals of endangered species
9.3.16 ban the importation of animals for zoos except where the importation will assist the overall conservation of the species
9.3.17 ban the importation of animals for use in experimentation, except where absolutely necessary for vital health research
9.3.18 ban the exportation of animals to jurisdictions where levels of legislative protection are below those of Australia
9.3.19 ensure that any free trade negotiations and/or agreements do not undermine Australian animal welfare standards.

I am emailing Bob Brown requesting a clarification.

Perhaps the NSW Greens are a rogue element that got hijacked by Wires or the RSPCA?
