Hey all, firstly let me just say that I handle my snake fairly regularly, I know some of you don't agree with that, and I understand your POV. So just no negativity please.

Just wondering how long it's safe to have your snakes away from their heat source in hot weather and in cold weather? We just had our dude out for about 45 mins while we cleaned his house. Is that too long in an 18 degree room? Is there a general rule of thumb or what?

What do you guys all do?

i am not that experienced but i handle my python when ever and i dont really care how long its out for but normally from 10 - 45 minutes i really dont think it will effect it as long has you keep a eye on it and are not scaring it
but i always make sure i try not to handle her the two days after it has been feed and during her shedding time
hopes this helps there will probs be more expert advice coming from people :):)

If you are handling it, it wont get cold. If the room is 18*c but ur body is like 37*c or watever, it will be fine with your body heat.

It doesn't really matter, because you're a heat source. If it starts getting too cold, then put it around your neck and let it heat up again.

shouldn't be a problem. If they were out in the wild they owuld still experience the same extremes. wouldn't hurt to get them use to it from time to time...

Mine actually finds comfort in my shirt all the time?? My body is a heat sourse I guess~!

i fell bad about taking them out in winter because my hands are always freezing cold!! needless to say i just plonk them in my lap while watching tv, i dont think they appreciate my cold cold hands :)

my bredlis generally out fro around 5-6 hours a night most nights with no probs, on weekends hes often out for 10+ hours.

even in winter he likes to cruise around the house for hours at a time, he rarely puts hmself back in his cage by himself but has done it occasionally in winter when he wants to get warm again.

mine just try and go inside my jacket or something if its to cold

i have handle mine for a while cause we put all the tanks up on a shelf to make room for the beardies huge tank and im to short to get them :( lol and my bf is to lazy to help me get them down

i usually handle mine during the day, where its warmer..
If its at the back yard, would be max about 30mins in the sun..

At nite would be 'food time'.... :)

So do you just let them slink around the house? Do you have kids? My mother in law would freak if she thought I'd let my bredli slink around the house. I'd LOVE to do that! Maybe when she's full grown.

I thought it was illegal to let them rome around your house as I thought it stated that a reptile must be kept in an apropritae enclosure at all times.

I could be wrong though.

Hi have a 7 month old bredli girl, she's still getting used to being handled, so I try to hold her for a bit every day, but I just vary the time period. I find I leave it up to her. If she's happy to sit with me on the couch I will let her, if she seems not in the mood then a 5-10 minute visit will do too. Then she has her couple of days break after her feed. Saturday was a fantastic warm day, so she sat outside with me for nearly an hour. She was trying to hide under my arm when she was done, so we went back inside. I think even in their own way they will let you when they've had enough.

I would also love to let her go her own way in the house, but she's so small she's got too many hiding places when I would never be able to get her back from.

Yeah my bredli is 9 months old (on Wednesday acutally) I don't get her out every day, maybe a couple / few times a week. Sometimes only when I clean her tub out. She is so placid and always has been I don't see the need (nor have the time) to have her out for hours on end. When she gets bigger and easier for the kids to handle it may be different though. I've had her out in the sun with me too (holding her) but with my magpie issues at the moment (see other thread) I'm worried they'll take her right out of my hand!
