I think all reptile bulbs are a waste of time and money. They charge huge amounts of money and blow after weeks or months. I found this completely unacceptable which is why we dont use them anymore. Our heatlamps cost about $3 each and i've only ever replaced one in about three years of use....

Thanks for the tips on handling ceramics (or not, as the case may be). I've been using ceramics for a couple of years now, and have had no problems at all (unlike the lights which blew with depressing regularity) - love the reliability and lack of light suddenly flooding the enclosures at all hours (two of them are in my bedroom and life is much more pleasant now!), but I'll leave my fingers off them, just to extend their life. Seconded for Ebay, too; they're heaps cheaper online.

i use ones you can buy from woolies/safeway

Ive read a few posts about this lately and i know it prob sounds heaps dumb, but what exact light bulbs from woolies are you using? I have spent $80 on 3 dif globes exo terra in a month trying to get my temps good and consistent and i read that people are using normal globes!!! please fill me in! :)

Bucket,

I am not saying that you should not swap to ceramic heat emitters. However, there has to be a reason why your bulbs were not going the distance, because Exo Terra is a quality brand and pretty reliable. It might be worth knowing for future projects.

If you do want to try ascertain the reason, I need to know more information. “Bulbs” could be anything from incandescent, to halogen, fluoro, metal halide, mercury vapour and a few others. Do you run these on a thermostat? If so, exactly what type (the brand is not particularly important, but you might wish to include it). The surge protector won’t protect you from variable voltage. Do you know if the local voltage of power from your wall sockets does vary a bit or not?

Were you running exactly the same electrical setup before the problem with the current bulbs? In other words, were you previously running bulbs in that enclosure without dramas and have you added or removed anything electrical that draws on the same wall socket?

Lastly, what reptiles do have in the enclosure, how many power consuming devices and what are they?

Like I say, its entirely up to you if want try and determine the reason.
