I want to use a 7watt heat mat to heat a plastic container ( 50L) will this burn the plastic? or burn the wood its sitting on?

no it shouldn't, i have been using 7-14watt ones (small and big) without a thermostat underneath tubs, some with and some without wood, depending on how hot it gets, i personally have never had any signs of it burning or starting to burn.

all the best, daniel
