Hi guys.

Just after opinions on whether a heat mat should be on constantly for a hatchy in a click clack or if you'd only turn it on for a couple of hours per day.

Thanks

First thing, throw the heat mat in the bin and get a heat cord. Then connect it to a thermostat and run it 24/7 for a hatchy

I have always turned the heat off at night(unless basic house temp is very low, below 15) I Think it would depend on what species you have? mine are coastals and Jungle..... I turn my heat off around 4.00pm and on at around 7.00am(my heatpads are on thermostats and timers)

being your in townsville i dont see an issue with the click clack being turned off for a few hours a night .

Yeah that was my next question. This time of year our daytime barely gets below 30 and night time is not much cooler, so how much does this influence the amount of time the heat mats are on for?

I'm not really asking for advice as much as everyone's opinions. There's so much conflicting information out there and sometimes it's good to just ask 'how do you do it?'.

Yes, we have two beautiful new hatchies, one jungle and a roughy but these aren't our first hatchies and our others have grown up healthy and strong.

I usually just go with what works and common sense as I agree with you, there is such conflicting information. I am relatively new to herping, but all my animals are healthy and happy so far :) (see previous post )

Me too!

It is interesting to hear other people's processes though. Some are straight down the line - you must keep this species at this temp at all times, others are polar opposites and don't use any heating at all.

Anyone else care to share their process.

Also, this is not meant to become a war of words due to difference of opinions, just a thread to state your ways and that's all.

Umm why? they both heat, one is flat and one is round. Why not just conect the heat mat to a thermostat (if it isn't already)?

In regards to the OP I have always kept temps constant day and night but I am also in newcastle and temps in summer drop to 20ish degrees during the night and high teens this time of year.
If I was in a warmer climate I am not sure what I would do, possibly still run a thermostat and heat 24/7 but have the thermostat set a few degrees lower.

I just run my thermostats practically the same all year round.

If you really want, run a day/night thermostat with different temps.
Or, do what I do with my bearded dragons.. Turn the thermostat off overnight (their memory is sufficiently long enough such that
turning the thermostat back on, it will be still set at the correct temp).

use a thermostat this will make sure the temp stays correct and doesnt overheat.....if you arent going to use het cord get good quality heat mat....not a cheapo one....the ones that are made out of that green plastic stuff are scarey...we have two habistat ones and have never had a problem with them

The ones we have aren't green so I think they are fine.

Thanks for the comments so far, keep em coming!

Bump. Anyone else for a vote on a specific type heat mat for a 30 litre tub? Been looking at the Habistat....not sure if they have a built in thermostat or not.

***Acknowledges hijacking Akarsha's thread a tad***
