Hi Guys,

So I'm getting a hatchling roughie to add to my collection. Very excited! Anyway, I just wanted to know how you guys heat your RSP? Heat matt or Heat Lamp? The reason I ask is, I intend to keep the hatchling in a small exo-terra rainforest habitat kit. It's 30x30x45cm, and yes, I do have a click clack ready and on stand by if he shows any sign of stress. But because they're aboreal I thought he would enjoy something taller rather than longer.

I've attached a picture of the enclosure set up and ready for him - photo just doesnt show the two dowel that i've now attached horizontally so he's got a stable perching place.

So what do you guys think of the enclosure set up and which heating option should I go for?

How is the heat from a heat mat going to get through the substrate you have in there?

Pretty much what Snowman said.

If you want to use a heat mat I'd take out most of that substrate and leave a very thin layer... If you don't, no heat will get through to the top to warm your RSP.

Otherwise, just use a heat lamp.

its a pretty small enclosure but looks great for a roughie.
You might not be able to get a good temp gradient with a lamp as the enclosure is pretty small. Better to use a heatmat on 1/3 of the bottom and take the substrate out either using thin newspaper, the kitty litter grey paper stuff or thin layer of substrate that you are using now. You can always put a small lamp at the very top just in case but I would just use heat mat.
