One of my workmates saw this snake near his house (Sydney area) and I was wondering if anyone could help ID it. The markings on the head are particularly interesting.

it looks to me to be a white crowned snake "Cacophis harrietae "

their range extends right down from rocky to the outskirts of sydney

yep your spot on white crowns join at the back of the head golden crowns dont..... well done that man

Yes, it is, but only mildly so. They're not considered dangerous to humans.

"is that snake poisonous?" i hear you ask. No australian snakes are poisonous, some are venomous not poisonous. The only 2 known poisonous Australian reptiles are the Green Turtle and the Hawksbill Turtle. Poison is toxic if inhaled or ingested. Venom is generally harmless if ingested but toxic when it comes in contact with the underlying tissue normally protected by the skin. Sorry i just had to say it :)
