Herp Patients

Edit: should have chosen a different title for the post... injured isn't exactly the correct term. Should have been more along the lines of 'herp patients'

I don't post here very often but thought I might share these... Not the best photos as they were taken on a phone and uploaded onto instagram, but here are two recent animals in care.

- Juvie beardie with MBD
- 3.1kg underweight female coastal carpet which had dystocia and severe subsequent constipation

Funny that the guy that brought her in said "stick some betadine on it (the wounds) and she'll be right- failed to notice the very obvious swelling.

woah those poor animal's!! the stench from that bucket would've been something,just wondering did they find the animals like that or is that the result of keepers neglecting them? (i would hope not)? if it is that's appalling,disgusting...heres hoping they recover quickly

They are both supposed to be wildlife, according to the people who brought them in. I strongly suspect however that the beardie was wild caught and kept in significantly suboptimal conditions. For a young dragon to have such reduced bone 'density' e.g. the radiographs, as well as a small spinal bump over the pelvis and neurological signs (twitching), I can guess there was no UVB or calcium supplementation. The dragon is doing well now, however. The snake was quite bad, the faecal material had become really quite dessicated. She is now on injectible antibiotics, fluids and pain relief. Hoping she will defecate by herself as I was unable to remove all of the faecal material with the one general anaesthetic. If not, she may need to have another snooze.

And the smell... to be honest it didn't bother me too much but my colleagues clearely weren't keen.... they aren't as interested in reptiles as I am either. Granted I cannot complain, given that most of my colleagues are somewhat "nervous" around my special patients, but are still able to help me sometimes (though perhaps reluctantly) and my boss is terrified of snakes I'm working on them, however

Poor little guys...glad you are helping them out...that python will hopefully feel some relief already just having all that removed!

That's really sad. Nice to see they are finally getting the help they deserve and hopefully they recover as quick as possible.
Is that large bloody patch on the Coastal torn skin/scales? Would they ever fully recover?

yep correct me if im wrong but the word dystocia means eggbound or eggbinding

Whats ur plan for removing the remaining eggs?

the snake is a very cool case, i can see how you would worry about how they are kept

Sorry guys, I forgot to reply here again! Helikaon, there was just one egg, with a mass of faecal material (mostly fur) packed up behind it. The general anaesthetic had already been going too long so I left a small volume of it behind. My hope was now it had softened with the copious flushing/essentially an enema, and once she had a feed she would pass the remainijgnfaecal material.

She has now eaten two adult quail and one jumbo rat, and is very very eagerly eating. So hopefully get some weight back on her prior to release. But she is doing very well and has passed the faecal material.
