Hi everyone

2 weeks ago i brought home a 8.5 month old coastal carpet.
Im using newspaper in his click clack. He has a hide at each end but the last few days hes been hiding under the newspaper and not coming out ....
He was exploring alot the first week but now he just sits there all day and night.
Any ideas as to why he is doing this ? hot end is 33 - cold end is 27

Thanks
AJ

snakes are shy animals let him settle in a bit longer, he might hide all day and night till his full grown, i wouldn't be worried

Could be coming up to a shed, it probably just feels more secure under the newspaper than in the hide.

Thanks for the replies .. he had a feed last week and is due for a feed tonight.
Think it might be best to skip his food for a week and leave him alone for now ?
He still has full colour and eyes have not clouded yet since i got him. Hes my first snake as im from nz and just moved over here, have been reading daily for info over the past 4 months but its all different when its hands on :( are there any signs of shed b4 the eyes cloud ?

Thanks again
AJ

That is a good thing, newspaper is probably one of the best things for snakes to hide in. Just make it easy for it to find its way under the paper, this can be done by roughing up the edges of the paper. Newspaper is very good because it is a very tight hide for the snake, many ppl provide them with hides that are far to big and essentially useless, you cant go wrong with paper though.

Thanks cris
i moved his heavy/small hide off the heat mat and put it on the cold side.
Also put his thermometer probe under the paper and it reads 34.4 will this be to high?
waiting for a micro B1me to get here (due today) so i have 3x 0.5mm sheets of polysti between heat mat and tub to keep temp down.

there scales go darker and you can notice 'creasing' when they bend, you will often miss the milky eyes so thats still a possibilty he is going to shed

ild offer food but if it refuses leave him a week

That temperate is fine, some of mine hide under the newspaper, nothing to worry about.I wouldnt bother feeding at this stage, wait a week or so,by the sound of it,your doing ok,cheers..

Calliope, our Bredli likes to hide under the newspaper too. My kids say she is reading the funnies, lol.
With some snakes, they feel loose when you hold them, the skin moves more. And they look duller, well, mine do anyway! Any pics of him?

I use newspaper as well and have given up on hides altogether. All of my snakes hide under the paper whether they have a 'hide box' or not. Good chance he's going into shed if he's hidden for a week or more, it's common behavior. Cheers!

Thanks again for the replies all. Dont have pics yet as ive been trying not to disturb him as much as possible but ill wait till tonight and take afew pics b4 i offer him a feed. Sorta wanna pull him out just to make sure hes still in good health but really dont wanna stress him at all. Think its just me stressing atm lol.
