Hi guys are their any national stats on how many people keep
snakes in Australia and how many are bred each year?

I've often wondered what the answers to those questions are. I doubt there'd be any stats, but I could be wrong. Let's have a snake census!

Well, we seem to sit back and bitch about lack of education and all sorts of stuff.
There is the upcoming council moves in Vic, so it would be interesting to know our political clout?

I think there's some kind of National Herp Association in the making. I haven't seen anything about it recently, so if someone could kindly update us on its progress, that would be fantastic.

I've heard something like 5% of households have reptiles (think originally quoted on a Adrian's reptile world), but don't know if thats an accurate figure or just a number thrown around. Doesn't really answer your question but did a bit of rough maths, there are currently approx 7.500.000 households in aus, times by 5% is 375,000 households with reptiles, lets say the average number of reptiles in each household is 2 or 3, means approx 750,000 - 1 million reptiles kept in aus. This is a complete guessimate with no official figures so before you jump down my throat i know its probably completely wrong

Ha ha Love the way you think, but I was looking for actual figures. Surely
some one out there can give me a qualified guesstimate?

Now that's an interesting thought. I'm told that NSW parks have the numbers for that state on record but none of the other state have the same computer prog.

I forgot about the the state authorities. They already do a reptile census when they get us to submit our returns (although I don't know if every state requires this). They're in the best position to release stats on the number of keepers and animals. Do they have to do an annual report? There might be stats there.

Probably each state keeps it own figures but there may not be a head agency that looks at all the figures nationally.

I have no idea, but I reckon Leamos' guess would be pretty close, probably 1.5-2 million at most.
Not Australia, but I read an atricle the other day about how there are more registered reptiles in the UK than there are dogs.
There are now over 8 million herps in the UK apparently.

Reptiles aren't registered in the UK but I would imagine 8-10 million would be about right.
To get an accurate figure here would be easier for legal animals as they are licensed and theoretically the authorities know exactly how many we have. I reckon around a million would be about right with something like the same number of illegal and exotics.
