just wondering how aften peoples turtles use their basking platform
my friends turtles dont leave the water very often so just wondering what other peoples experience is.

every turt is diff. i have had turts that rarely left the water and others that were basking 1/2 the day everyday

Is he using a basking light over the platform? Mine are out under it all day, untill you walk in the room, then they dive in the water. Turtles won't come out of the water if the water is warmer than the air temp. They love a good basking light just as much as dragons do.

my two saw shelled turtles bask quite often. but my big murray river turt will only bask when we are not in the house. everytime we come hom he is basking and as soon as he sees us he dives off. same during the night too. its quite cute.

I never see my longnecks basking and this has worried me. i sometimes take them for a sit on the grass and hope this helps the basking process.

Turtles are sneaky buggers
They proberly do bask but when u least suspect it

As Tennille said, they are all different.
Out of my 9 turts I have 3 that will come out and bask every day. 2 in an outside enclosure that will bury themselves under leaves all day and only go in the water at night, and 4 that I never see bask.

I agree with the others that they all vary, although most seem to bask regularly morning and afternoons.
Some will also occasionally engage in "nocturnal basking." At night they will be sitting on a rock with their head held high, as if it's a sunny morning. Apparently this is more of a drying off thing than an action to raise their body temp.
Some will also ask bask in the sun by floating out-streched on the water.

mine dont bask often, there is 1 that will sit in the shallows but not right out of the water

One of mine hardly ever goes into the water, spends most of his life on the ground under the fake rock waterfall. He's not aestivating because he moves around under there, but every now and then I have to put him in the water so he can eat and drink....he might stay there for a couple of days then he heads back to his hidey hole. In winter he digs himself in there to hibernate.
Like we said, they are all different individuals, and after millions of years of evolution I suppose they know what they are doing.

my big murray will onyl ever sleep on his turtle dock. every single night when our lights go out, he heads up there and will not move until i come out in the morning. he has done this for over a yr now. its quite cute.
