I have a big problem that I thought some of you may also have encountered

I don't have enough money to fulfill my herp desire!!!!! There is always "something else" that I wish I had. I need to know what people have done in the past to overcome this problem.

Cheers
Mick

Who does have enough money to support and GROW their Herp desire. Just save bit by bit, be patient and you will eventually be rewarded.. :)

thats true for any hobby
i breed birds out which some breed all year round that helps.

Buck,

I have seen this so often that its not funny. So many newcomers to the hobby and want everything at once. Well unless you are very well off, it ain't going to happen.

My advice to most newcomers who want to expand is to start off with a small colony of Spotted Pythons. Raise them quickly and start breeding them within 2 years. As the most popular beginners first snake, these always sell well. I call them the bread and butter snakes.

Simply use the money you make from these each year to build your hobby which is now paying for itself.

"Beg, crawl, grovel.....no seriously, like most people who first get into herps, its all new and it's a must have on ya list. You'll soon realise that you end up with all sorts, and a mismatched ('stamp') collection. Research, read, study. 1) ask yourself where you want to take this new found passion, and what you'd like to achieve 2) get the food for your animals breeding-saves you alot of cash 3) build the cages......food+cages= you can keep whatever you want (according to laws). Well planned set-up, means happy reptiles....better chance of breeding. It still takes time and money to build a good collection, you have to crawl before you can walk"

I dont have time fore a job, i have a zoo at home lmao. It helps to have a hubby who works, and it also helps to have web design knowlegde as only a few large clients per year and maintanence of those sites keeps the snakeys feed and housed, i breed food in the winter, (not in summer as my allergies flare up then) freeze what i can, then buy it in bulk. Start of with some cheap (bread and butter) Breeders as bob said and let them fund your growing collection, following this i have got a healthy collection up already and still growing.

Get a good job with more pay and your O.K.
Money it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four star daydream,
Think I'll buy me a football team
Money get back
I'm all right Jack keep your hands off my stack.
Money it's a hit
Don't give me that do goody good bullshit
I'm in the hi-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a Lear jet
Money it's a crime
Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie
Money so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a rise it's no surprise that they're
giving none away

hey lol, look what the censor did! now it dosent rhyme!

I agree with Bigguy.

I have seen alot of people go overboard and stretch themselves too thinly in our hobby, only to end up having to sell the majority of there collection to get themselves out of strife!
Build up you collection slowly, work with some bread and Butter snakes to expand gradually without too much coming out of your own pocket.

Thanks for all of the replies but I'm afraid most of you have taken me to literally. The post was tongue in cheek(hence the smilie and wink). Just trying to lighten the mood a little from all of the stuff happening of late.

In saying that though there is so many things that I see up for sale that I say"geez I would love that" but somehow manage to resist the temptation.

Buck, ditch growing reef and grow reefers. Should improve the cash flow until ya get done anyways.

Well if your still at school, get a job in the holidays, work hard during the days and party hard at night and by the end of the hols you will hopefully have $500 plus. Thats what i plan to do to help pay for my next project!!

Regards Alex
