I don't have a snake yet so I thought I'd check out the people first.

I want to start off with a couple of baby green tree snakes and watch them grow. I like the idea of them 'cos they don't get too bulky and I can give them relatively plenty of room to hang around indoors.

I have a Jack Russell dog who takes no notice of blue tongue lizards, (and they take no notice of him) but I thought it might be a different matter with say, pythons. I should be able to teach him to leave them alone, but I'm afraid they will perceive him as a threat or as dinner. He's only little.

Could the tree snakes (or for that matter pythons) grow used to having him around? Obviously I don't intend to leave him to baby-sit them when I'm not there.

Gday and welcome Mr wong.
I think you'll find all the people on here are easy to get along with and very friendly and helpful.
I think if the dog see's the snake in the cage over time it should get used to it, but i wouldnt really handle the snake/s when the dog is around. I havent had any experience with snakes around dogs so maybe someone else can help you out there.

Anyways, welcome to the hobby, and get ready to be sucked in to a never ending spiral of "damn, i want another snake/lizard/turtle/frog" syndrome.

Cheers, Alan.

Welcome to the site MrWong.

Personally I wouldn't trust a Jack russell or any other dog for that matter, at best you will stress the snake out, at worst he could injure or kill the snake.
Just not worth the risk.
I am not a big fan of letting snakes wonder around the house anyway.

Welcome MrWong. GTS not the best snake to start out with as Baritji said - hard feeders. You should look at some of the python species. If your a beginner you might want to look at some of the childrens pythons Cheap to buy, easy to get feeding, hardy and don't grow to large sizes.

i take my snake out with 2 dogs inside and so far i have given both of them reasuring kicks to tell them not to come near me when i have him out. IT WORKS. ateast 4 me.

One of my dogs is ok with them out but it doesn't matter what i do to the other its just kill kill kill. So she stays outside when i have them out.

Antaresia are OK...I think there are better species perhaps a bredli or a species of carpet. You NEED an enclosure....if that is what you were asking.

Hi there Mr Wong,
I'm a newbie here too, but I have my enclosure set up and am picking up my 4 month old Coastal Carpet on friday arvo. I can't wait !

Welcome and good luck with the Herping

Thanks for the welcome everyone.
I didn't mean I wasn't going to have an enclosure. Just that I thought if I had a large enclosure, 2 green tree snakes could stretch out and wander around. Do the same with an olive python for example I'd have to use a double garage.

My jack russell comes into the aviary with the blue tongues and digs for mice. It doesn't even seem to notice the lizards because I've had them longer than the dog. This one is good with ducks and various types of birds. He grew up with them. (The notable exceptions are pigeons and magpies. Magpies are such a tease and pigeons eat all the bread in the park and make the dog jealous.) I still would never trust a jack russell with anything without keeping a close eye on it.

As for leaving snakes loose in the house ? is that the crazy sort of thing I'm going to do if I hang around you lot? Although, come to think of it, it would probably be easier to clean up after snakes than the birds and the duck making themselves comfortable on the sofa at the moment.

Back to the subject. GTS are not a good idea heh? Childrens Python sounds so whoosy! I'd prefer a snake called Great Big Footy Players Python! (I know it's named after Mr Children. Just kidding. I also think it may not be spelt like that but I'm not sure.)

My first choice would have been a diamond python, and my second and olive python. Then I thought maybe I should have something that stays fairly small and won't fancy my dog.

How about that fantastic looking thing that you've got for an avatar Hugsta? Should I sstick with thingss with legss?

On a final note. No Africancichlidau (do you have a knick-name?). I've never had another name on this site. In fact this is my first thread in my entire life. I've been a looker on other sites but never put pen to paper, so as to speak.

(BTW. Between me and you, ... it's not my real name!)

I've got a really nice Coastal Carpet Python for sale at the moment Mr. Wong. For an astoundingly low price of $150 this little treasure could be yours. It'll grow into a really nice big blokey type snake. Not like them little Childrens wimpy things. Give me a yell if you're interested.

Thanks Mr. wong, for that, you dont have to find my travellers cheques.

Yep that was a good one :)
The only reason I asked Mr. Wong is because if there were two of you as members I was wondering if two Mr Wongs made a Mr Wright :)
