I've been reading a few comic books lately. I've never been into them, but with the recent Marvel movies and the use of an ipad I've read a few series. What I have noticed is that they are all written in capital letters. So the spazza's who think that writting in capital letters must read comic books yelling!!!
I think this is proof that it isn't yelling since it's been done this way since the 1930's.
What are your thoughts :)

I think graphic novels are a stylised medium seperate to other written text personally...

I have always commonly accepted that WORDS in caps in "standard" written medium to be an EMPHASIS on the word or PHRASE seperating them from the REST of the text.

I AS WELL would be INTERESTED to hear what other people thought of the MATTER.

I have only known words in caps to be considered yelling since the use of texting and the internet as conversational mediums. I thought words in caps were there for Emphasis etc... On a side note, I dont get bent out of shape when people write in capitals exclusively I know it can tick a few people off though lol

That's the difference between TXT and print media Crystal. On your phone you can't really use bold or italics in your txt so the convention is there that you mention. Red-Ink's point is a valid one. Also the comic is formatted this was as it was considered the font in capitals makes it seem easier/quicker to read. Which is also the reason for the font size and use of columns in ewspapers and magazines.

In forum situations I think it depends if ALL the words are written in Caps then it could be taken as yelling rather than the emphasis of just one or two words. The one that always makes it seem like attention seeking verging on speaking over the top of people is when a whole post is done in bold let alone in BOLD CAPS! Which is made almost hysterically over reacted WHEN DONE IN ITALICS & THEN UNDERLINED FOR EMPHASIS!!!!

Just my thoughts as an English teacher who has to teach visual texts and social media...

it can be yelling, but not always, it's often to emphasise a point in a sentence.

as in "how DARE you?" the capital DARE, if compared to actually saying it, you'd know that it's not yelled.

where as "I"LL KICK THE POO OUT OF YOU" would be considered yelling, it's all dependant on what's typed and how.

Hahaha yeah I HATE people who get all bent out of shape over capitals.
I work as an electrical draftsperson/designer. Everything on my drawings is written in capitals so my caps lock is always on. If I shoot off a quick email or reply email people get upset that I dont bother turning the caps off. I just don't get it....

lol sometimes i confuse people because i will start an email OFF LIKE THIS THEN GO oops caps and finish as norm ha ha. What if you type like tHiS? does that mean your kinda yelling? :p

No it means you shouldn't have so many bevies before you type...

Depends on how it is written, the context etc.

If I were to say, YOU'RE A SPUNK MONTYSRAINBOW!!
It shows exitement to say it... so it can be descibed as yelling.

But if I were to say, Montysrainbow, I think your a spunk...
It means the same thing, though it's read out as not loud, not yelling not much emphisis... etc.

Using capitals does make some things easier to read, and sometimes it just helps to avoid confusion.
Like snowman, i've had cause to use capitals for tech type drawings, and there are times i wish others would use capitals when leaving me notes, there are a lot of people out there when given a pen and paper make Drs writing look tidy and easy to read. ! ! !

thats the power of the written word. in order for it to be read as it was intended, sometimes you've got to emphasis what you are trying to get across :) No need to get bent out of shape about it - HAVING SAID THAT...... lack of punctuation doesnt always help matters.

Since the age of the computer IMO capitals have become a sign of anger or yelling in social media situations, texting etc. I dont worry about it, although to me I read anger/abruptness when reading something on a social site like this..... Comic books came from an era when a Ho was something you used in the garden, or what santa said..... Pot was where you planted flowers, dope was someone simple, hardware came from a handyman shop and software wasn't even a word..... everyone used 'ice' and it wasnt a problem..... you had to use a key to open your car door.... etc.... If modern comicks still use caps, it is prolly a throwback to old methods, or the caps suit the small "voice bubbles" and are more clear and readable than lower case (especially for kids reading the comicks under the covers by torch light when they should be asleep) :D

SO STOP ASKING STOOPID QUESTONS OR I"LL COME AND TURN YOUR HEATLAMP....... ON YOU. Hehehehehe. see, that looks angry, even tho we all know you are a big softie (soft-serve?) snowman

Modern comic books use all capitals. Graphic novels also do the same. Engineering diagrams and the like are all capitals. I don't agree that since computers and texting people now interpret it as shouting. I think there are just a few fools out there who want something to sook over. Capitals means nothing it's simply easier to read.

Then how come you arent using caps in all your texts? ^ BBbbbbwwwwaaaahahahahahahahaha busted!

Caps have thier place.... like you say.... street signs, for example... easy and fast to recognise especially from a distance while travelling. But in social sites like this I still think it is SHOUTING..... but it doesnt worry me, I can read shout 8)

It amuses me that you started the thread by asking a question about what others thought and now you are adament that our opinions are invalid... Hmmmmm.

BTW the example of tech drawings etc is of limited validity as it is an industry standard and not a general use within society.

I think comics and technical info is a bit different as its not a conversation with someone.
Posts completely in capitals or walls of unbroken text for example are just harder to read for a lot of people.

I'm not going to comment about handwriting because mine is nothing to brag about, but in the electronic sphere it comes across to me as yelling. I'm not going to "sook" about it, but I never enjoy receiving messages in caps. As others have said, it's also hard to read.

If it was hard to read why would industry use it? They use it because it clearer and easier to read.
Grunt, I made my mind up after hearing peoples opinions. Though I was leaning towards Capitals being fine already. But if it amuses you then thats a bonus :D

I tried and it gets changed. I'm happy to write in small caps too :) But I've seen people throw wobbolies about people writing in all caps. When really it's not shouting or a big deal.

It depends on the context, I think. In a short note on a technical drawing it no doubt works well. But try reading a 200,000 word novel in caps. I can't imagine that would be fun.

It is generally easier to read a word or a phrase in caps, but for lengthier pieces of text, it does make it harder. Although I am guilty of it myself on occasion:

i hate it when people type entirely in lower case and dont puncuate or use proper grammar at all trying to decipher what someone is trying to say can be irritatingly difficult sometimes i think the english language is dead also it was actually really hard to not puncuate at all while typing this paragraph
