hi i finaly got my python home on saturday and when i was putting him in the tank he didnt want to come out the little plastic container so when i finaly got him to move a little to pick him up whak he bit my

so now im over that first bite i put him in the tank he just straight away hid in his little tree hide
but now he only comes out when the uv and heat are turned off at night and then as soon as the lights come back on in the morning he is straight back in his hide

is this usual or will he venture out of his hide more as he relaxes

also when i changed his water this mornin he just went phyco and ran away straight to the other side of the tank and was wriggeling like mad

just need to know if he will calm down im not going to touch him for a week till he gets settled

jus worried if this is not normal thats all just need to know what to expect

any help would be great

thanks guys
cheers

most pythons are nocturnal, so you dont see them do much during the day.

how old is the python? jungle pythons are known to be pshyco. leave it for a week to settle in

haha, mine sleep all day and party all night,...he will sleep outside of his hide as he relaxes though, mine are happy to nap in full view of teh world,...

count urself lucky if he runs away when u go to change his water, mine see that as a great opportunity to go in for the kill,.....

oh and 9 months in mine are still happy to take a chunk whenever they get the opportunity,..so dont hold ur breath with them calming down,..i handle them at every second day fro a minute or so, otherwise i handle them just to move them to their sunning enclosure to bribe them into loving me and they are slowly accepting me,....

what type of jungle is it, apparently palmerstones are nippier than the athertons,..

its normal , leave it be for a week or 2 then slowly start to handle it .
it may settle down a lot , it may only settle down a little [ every snake is diffrent] my jungle is very placid , but others are not .

cheers guys for all the info

he is a black and gold jungle python and its only still a hatchling so i guess over 6 months old i supose i dont know exactly

so i guess ill just let him settle down in there and try to start to hold him in a couple of weeks after i feed him a couple of times

thanks again for all the info peoples

will he also stop licking all the glass he just keeps slithering around the tank bumping his nose into all the glass is this just him testing his grounds so to speak ??

so now im over that first bite

 the first ones the worst, its the mental thought that makes us scared of a bite, the bite itself, as you have found out , is nothing from a hatchie, bites from a kitten are far worse,

You don't need UV, they're nocturnal, some say the UV enhances the colour.

Try a gentler light (if its not your heat source) it may be too bright for him,

With time he will come out more, during the day, for now, leave him alone for a week, try a feed - if he refuses try again in another week - give him a few days to digest and then pick him up, limit it to 10 min a couple of times a week until he seems to settle,

and remember when he starts the whole shedding cycle (could be every 3 weeks at his age) he will be very defensive, their eyesight is not brilliant at the best of times, once they start shedding its worse so they'll jump at anything that moves when young

he has experienced a change of environment and a whole lot of new smells and he's scared and still young.......

cheers for that

i just did his first feed with him in his new home wasnt scared at all he smelt around for a bout 10 seconds then bam grabed it straight away

he seems to be settling in now alot better not running around from side or the tank to the other now he just comes out and chills out on his vine all wrapped up so i think ill try handel him for a bit on sunday or monday see how it gose if he still stresses out ill leave it for another week and try feedin him a few more times

thanks alot for all the help peoples

cheers

some jungles may never settle down, they are quiet a flighty snake, more of a looker than a handler!
