I like the idea of having a website or at least a sticky thread on this site dedicated to prevention of herp theft, with photoes and as much information as possible of any stolen animals. If it is there permanently for all to see, there's a chance that the animals can be identified, even several years after the theft, then reunited with their true owners and the pathetic excuses for people who waste our oxygen may also be identified and either handed over to the authorities, or perhaps better still, to those who would take the law into their own hands. The theft of animals is something I could never imagine a severe enough punishment for.
I would be more than happy to financially support a non profit website solely dedicated to stolen herp info, focussed mainly on tracking down stolen animals and identifying theives, and I imagine I wouldn't be the only one willing to do so. I'm also guessing it wouldn't be a particularly high maintenance or expensive venture.
Why anyone would steal animals I just can't understand, but then again, I suppose I'll never understand the desperate need for a hit of heroin or the twisted state of mind that could lead to someone ripping off a friend. I hope that I also never have to experience the sort of rage that would lead to an uncontrolable desire to get some serious revenge.
Stealing a car, telly or other replacable object is one thing, but animals are something completely different. I don't care if it's $100,000 worth of Chondroes or an eight year old's beloved blue tongue lizard, there is no punishment severe enough.
