Hi all,

Wife found this while going for an early morning walk (well thats what she calls it - I call it "get out of getting the kids ready for school"). Looked like it had been hit by a car.

I thought that it prob. should have been put down - but since I am no expert - we rang wires and got acquainted with our local 'wires recommended' vet.

Apparently after his/her beak was successfully fixed and the vet was bring it out of its anasetic the Kookaburra passed away :(. At least it died peacefully...

Its funny how every time I see an animal up close I really want one as a pet - enquired about looking after it on behalf of wires but was told "not a chance!" hey worth a shot - they are sending out some information on when the next wires careers course is on - and they said that there is a specialist reptile handler course I can do after...(unsure I'll get that one passed the boss though...)

Looks very bad from this angle...

but not too bad from the top...

(thanks sherminator for shaming me into a photobucket account...)

i caught a fledgling gang gang, one of the lil guys that didn't have a very great first flight! funny lil dude. took him to the local carer, nice old lady. didn't take any pics as i was to busy with the bird.

i always thougth it would be awsome to have a kingfisher as a pet, kooks are related but it would be awsome to have a bigish outdoor aviary with a pond and a pair of blue kingfishers.

pitty it died,

Join Sydney Wildlife Alex, 94134300. Better than WIRES, you'll just be lonely if you join them.
Only reason to join them is to do Dave Vella's reptile course. Mines more fun though.

is there something in melbourne simmular to that? i would be happy to volunteer some time at a wildlife shelter type thing.

Its all about angles pugs my boy. When I sell the course to my wife I play up the reptile/lizard angle - don't mention snakes - and hope the first rehab isn't an eastern brown.

I reckon claymores are even more fun pete!!! Atleast with them you get to see the target/victims walk into the zone!!! LOL

But in all seriousness, what sort of qualifications do you need to work for Sydney Wildlife??

You need to do the basic training course first then the reptile course if reptiles are your preferred thing.
We also put people on our books who have their own insurance and permit from DEC/NPWS and those who have done training with other wildlife groups like Wires.
The idea is its about the animal, not which group rescues it. In theory anyway.

Can you pm me the finer details/print please pete???
