My python went missing about 7 months ago due to an inquisative teenage boy. My partner recently found the python in our Budgie cage(budgie missing). I was previously feeding him/her adult mice and within a week would find the droppings(poop). However the budgie has remained as a lump for well over 2 weeks. I'm guessing that because of the larger size of food that it would take longer for my python to digest. Is this correct?

hahaha.. when i up'd jasta's food 1 size (pinky rats to fuzzy) he had quite a big bump in him for about a week i guess?? so if its a BIG difference then yeah i guess it could still be digesting?? aslong as hes got plenty of heat etc. I was told if the lump is there after a month then get him off to the vet for a check up. Jasta sometimes like to wait till a day after he sheds b4 he lets loose so to speak :p good luck tho.

if your python has been missing for that long, i would take it to a good herp vet for a check up. no doubt it has worms from what ever it has been eating. has it grown much? yes, your budgie will take longer for larger items to digest. keep him warm and let him settle back into his enclosure for minium stress issues. does he look healthy?

Yes and no. Food items naturally swell bigger than its original size due to gas build up inside the snake. And how quick or slow they take to digest depends on the size of the food, but inadequate heating can also cause the swelling and go down a lot slower. Just be careful that the budgie isn't rotting or obstructing the inside your little python. A vet trip could more than likely confirm whether or not its doing what it should be doing.

Pics? What sort of python is he? Were you finding skins and droppings around the house? 7 months is a long time lol, will give hope to all those people who lose their snakes.

Very clever, bird cages with verticle bars are a good way of catching snakes.

Thankyou for your replies, It appears that my python(Slithery) has not grown at all, although I live in a very cool area so I'd imagine that during the winter he/she did not feed very often. After the first few months of slithery missing i gave up any hope of finding him/her, I no longer have the full enclosure, lights etc available. I intend on getting something else soon. I live in the regional area of toowoomba and I'm not aware of any vets that deal with reptiles around here. While handleing slithery I have noticed that the lump is quite hard, previously after feeding I never handled so I'm not sure if that is normal either

I just took this photo, I believe that slithery is a coastal carpet python and about 19 months old.

its a budgie smuggler,...!!

(i know i have a terrible sense of humour,...) :p

Bowriver....Glad to hear you found your snake....

As others have said..Need to keep the warmth up to your snakes so the budgie digests.....and doesnt rot inside your snake.....

As for herp Vets in Toowoomba...No idea sorry..( I live Gold Coast) ....Maybe make a few phone calls....

Do you have ANY kind of heating on it at all? If not, then I would think that the budgie is starting to rot in his stomach. A vet check is a definite, in my opinion.

And I found this with a simple google search.

It's really not that hard to find a phone number when you've got the internet ;)

LOL LOL that's funny...

Definietely a vet check. If it's been outside for quite some time, check for mites as well. If a snake does have mites and then it's in or being put into an enclosure, they can multiply very quickly!!!!!! Be careful with that..

omg ur so lucky i lost my childrens python bout 7 months ago havent seen him since but i live right next to the bush and there are alot of mice in the bush round us
haha

thats heaps cool u found it

Hi mate. I'm in Toowoomba, you can pm me for a vet or I might have a spare heatmat etc you can borrow.

Nice one Dave94 .... You need to give him a warm spot.....

All good news

Thankyou all, I made a visit to the West Toowoomba vet on the 20th and pryor to going Slithery had done the deed of going to the toilet, so i also took in a sample. Turns out no worms, no mites, just in need of some good house keeping.

I purchased a new globe and a thermostat although I have not set the thermostat up yet. The vet suggested the probe go under the light. Now should this be close to the bottom of the enclosure or half way down.

Oh and I've always assumed Slithery was a he but the vet is almost certain I have a she!!
