Hey all.

I am sorry to add to the long list of other mite threads already on this forum but i am yet to find the answer i am looking for.

I was getting a little bit worried about how much time my carpet was spending in it's water bowl. So after further inspection and a bit of handling i noticed a few small grey dots moving around on my hand ( these things were tiny! ).
I am curious if these are mites? As most of the pictures i have seen have been on black ones under scales etc? Unless the ones i have found are freshly hatched mites?
I have also noticed a few small flies in the enclosure? Can attach a image if needed but after doing some research am pretty sure they are harmless to the snake and are just there because of the humidity caused by the snake tipping its water out.

If anyone can let me know if what i have is mites or if you can tell me about the flies please let me know.

Adult mites are usually blackish, pinhead sized critters. If you put some on white paper and smear them with your fingers, they leave a very telltale brown smear - digesting blood from your snake. They also gather around the eyes and under the chin especially, and leave the snake looking very dull. Their faeces can also give the snake a "dusty" look. Check the contents of the waterbowl by tipping it out through a piece of white cloth - mites drown very easily and they will be present in noticeable numbers if they are mites.

So if the ones i have are not mites then what might they be? I have read on a thread here of a type of mite that doesn't harm the snakes but actually eats other mites? Seemed a bit strange to me but who knows.
I have noticed his colour going from a nice bright yellow to a more dull yellow/browny colour. I have bought mac mite spray and decided to treat him as was really concerned and didn't want it to get out of control.

You will only have the predator mites if you have introduced them and if if you have mites because that is all they eat (other mites) and die off if there are no mites to eat. Maybe try to get a good picture of the thing and post it up.
