whats you method with keeping mould off eggs?

what is everyone exsperiance with keeping mould off eggs in an incubator? I heard someone say whipe lemon joice over them last year. but I wouldn't do it unless this has been used alot with other peoples. my good eggs are starting to get white and green mould growing on them I only gently whiped it off though with a tissue.

post your methods that work and keep the mould away.

cheers jody

I've tryed the lemon juice & it seemed to help a little bit, if you very gently wipe the mould off that can help too.
Are these the eggs you have in sphagnum? If so they might be too wet & it would probably be worth changing them over to vermiculite.

its both verm/sphagnum, I checked its not saturated it's just damp there is moisture on the lid every day though I am whiping it every second day.

using the lemon juice i had it start to grow back within the week... i gave up, ill just wait and see what happens. last season a mate of mine had BAD mould on a clutch of eggs... to the point that you literally couldnt see the eggs it was that bad... and still a few hatched.

i actually think i may have caused more damage then good by doing it every couple of days... i think they may have dried the shell a bit.

I only noticed it today so I whiped it off I did do the lemon thingy just then and they didn't have any mould what so ever but just to be safe then sorry I whiped them over anyways. they seam pretty good though.

last season I never used it and every time an egg would get mould I'd whipe it but it died within a few days the mould kept coming back.

thats why I've asked for any method to keep the mould away.

unfortunately by wiping it 'off' we are actually helping it spread across the egg much faster.

I didn't get a speck of mould last year, try a drier mix next time (only slightly). Or try no medium incubation?

I have used listerine on a cotton tip, It seemed to work with no ill effects on the hatchlings.
The mould may return after a few weeks use the listerine again then it doesnt return.
Use plain listerine not a flavoured one

Snake-lady, could it be the alcohol in the listerine that kills the mould? Wouldn't that also dry it out a lot too?

yeah I would like to know this as well? have you ever had any problems using this?

i was told by one of my breeder friend
(childrens and used to breed knobbies)
that if you but a bead of kitchen/bathroom silicone
(it has stuff in it that stops mould)
around the edge of the inside of the lid
(and let it set, to if you get a matching lid you can switch them once it has cured)
it will fill the container
(or incubator if you are using a non sealed container)
with this stuff
(that smells like vinegar , i think its called alo-something arowhter)
that kills bacteria
(and mould)
he has used it before and it worked fine on both his childreni and levi clutches,
but when i say it worked, i mean the eggs didnt grow mould,
(they may not have anyway))
but it works in theory and practice so im going to give it ago.
sorry about all the brackets and bad spelling , i dont hae time to right it properly,
and please dont criticise me and say i have no breeding experience, i have a buch of very knowledgable friends (and there is alot of people on here) that help me out.

Thanks,
Kel

Come on guys NO infomercials,BUT wait theres more....I would imagine you could use any of the products mentioned above with a cotton bud and lightly wipe the mold off...From what i hear the majority of time once mold starts its hard to stop...All the best..MARK

when l first started out l had problems with mould... the next year l made sure l sterilised everything by washing and then wiping or soaking in bleach and water mix. l only use vermiculite and l wash it with boiling water and let cool before l put in containers . l haven't had a problem with mould since. l also make sure the vermiculite isn't too moist....

good luck l hope they hatch for you :)
