Here's one all the aviculturalists will appreciate.

Found one of my Gouldian's on the floor of the aviary the other day, barely alive, with a whopping great tick buried in it's head. Removed the tick, but the Gouldian died about 20 minutes later.

Bloody hell!!! That things massive!! Poor birdie, would have been nearly sucked dry by that sucker ay!!

Yeah, spoke to Bird Vet Mike Cannon on Staurday, he says that finches that size have only about 3 mls of blood in their entire body, and that the tick may have sucked in as much as 10%. Then there's the effects of the venom on such a small body.......

thats a big one alright...im for ever deticking the reptiles that are rescued..always in the ears of the blueys and stumpietails..reptiles dont seem to be very bothered by them.i think they fall off after they feed,by i just like to relocate them with as little parasite as possible
bazmo

that would have sucked the brians right out of that little birdie

Yeah, and you should see the load echidnas can carry! I've seen them with over a dozen paralysis ticks on their heads. Doesn't seem to phase them too much.

:p

Poor little Gouldian. If the weather doesn't get them, then it looks like ticks will :( Sorry about your loss. It sure was a decent size looking tick. I never had that problem with my birds - luckily.

Cattle Tick... have seen skinks with them before, but never on a bird.

sorry to hear bout ur lil finch hix
my lil zebra finch died from worms d other day. teh only male i had aswell now i only got 4 females. gotta get another male soon. been seeing female sitting in nest allot.

Yeah well guys try going for a 1/2 hr bushwalk, then go swimming for 3 hours only to get out of the water and as you dry yourself you see something right on your bikini line. When you look closely you realise its a paralysis tick thats aleady sucked a good lot of blood of you and that it had attached itself prior to go into the sea for three hours. Made me feel sick cos i'm a wuss but the best effort was seeing my Dad and brothers come from a bushwalk only to realise they were covered in leeches. 5 mins later dad realises he's had one sucking on his chokoes long enough to beomce big and fat.
Yeehah!!!!!!!!!
