RE: Re: RE: Nasty......

Sounds good, looks like i might be able to pick up a bargain at the old bird show. I love those tricolour parrot finches, although they are still a bit pricey. They still have a fair way to come down. It was'nt that long ago that they were $2000 a pair, and now $400!
I'd like to get some doves, but i could'nt be bothered feeding out fruit everyday.

RE: Re: RE: Nasty......

Sad story Hix, mongrel things....we have them up here as well...they cause both the domestic and wild animals a real hassel. Alot of re-hab animals come in run down with the little buggers. Our worest enemy is the paralysis tick our biggest killer, offen the fate of many household pets. It Doesn't feel to good when you get them either....i aways seem to get a-few on me when out and about.
Nephurus- mate those Rose/purple crowns are awesome, worth the fruit feeding.....the top of the list i think is the Wompoo pigeon....mad to say the least.. :)

RE: Re: RE: Nasty......

Ticks are native! Air sac mite was introduced into wild Gouldian populations from aviary birds bought in from Europe (so I'm led to believe).
Indicus, the rose crowns are exceptionally beautiful, they have many at Taronga Zoo in the large flight aviaries. The Wompoo pigeon is an extraordinary animal. I've heard them before but never seen them. I put them in the category of birds i could'nt look after in an affordable sized aviary. I'd want to wire off about 2 acres before putting in a pair of them! I'll stick with little finches for the time being. Maybe some button quail as well.....

RE: Re: RE: Nasty......

I have to say i prefer the larger parrots and bred Indian Ringnecks, normals and lutinos and just got a pair of blues before i got out of birds, also bred Alexandrines which make great pets when hand raised from the egg.....

It's funny that all the different morphs, hybrids, etc just in the finches let alone all other birds are worth more than the regular coomom garden varieties. This has happened with fish, cats, dogs you name it and will happen here with reptiles eventually.I also find it funny how some people are dead against crossing snakes but will hunt down a hybrid bird or special colour morph to breed nicer and different offspring.Just a thought......The wildest looking bird i've seen is the Plains turkey,it was huge and just looked wrong, but one amazing bird i've seen is Australias largest stork which i don't recall the name of but indicus will...an awesome huge bird with a bill that can put a hole in you like a 9mm would .The place where they are at is the Rainforest Habitat in Port Douglas and are the first to ever breed them with the nly captive breeding pair in the world, and then for an even equally awesome bird is the Cassowary which i've had the privelege to see in the wild....wild prehistoric dangerous looking birds these guys :)
