RE: Re: RE: Native rat found in front yard

There is a huge water rat where I work at the Renmark Tower Tavern(balcony overhangs the Murray River) It usually comes out at night when the spotlights are on and people are chucking bread to the local ducks.

On a recent trip up the Tablelands i saw a heap of little carnivorous mice...can't recall the name but interesting little cratures that's for sure...had never heard of them before!!!

Also just recently saw my first white tail rat and have been told by a friend he saw one eating the guts out of a toad....very interesting as well!!!

Browns, they were probably Dunnarts. They have a full set of teeth top and bottom jaw, and are marsupial. Cheers

I have the complete book of australian mammals by the Australian museum given to me 1987 but is copyrighted 1983. A4 size. same thing?

Yeah, just the earlier version. The second edition from the 90's had several new species and a number of reclassifications, then was renamed "The Mammals of Australia".

Still the best book around that covers all the mammals found in Australia. Unless you want to fork out $240 for the recent "Australian Mammals: Biology and Captive Management", which I hear is absolutely brilliant.

:p

or Antechinus, They look basically the same. Antechinus males normally die after their first mating season from from sexual exhaustion. Poor little things.

Death after their first mating season seems to be very common among male dasyurid's, it's even been known to occasionally happen with some quolls.
