Hi all,

Would love to pick your collective brains please....:D

Am looking for (but not in an immediate hurry and would rather wait for the right ones) a set of GTP that we can at some stage breed.

Who is it everyone gets theirs from and what am I looking for? We have a carpet and a childrens python but have not had much to do with GTP except to admire all the beautiful pics people have posted. Would rather spend a little bit extra up front to have a beautiful mating pair later...

Am I better off getting yearlings or a pair thats already mated?

Am I better off getting two from seperate breeders? Are they much harder to look after then the other pythons we have?

if u get The more complete chondro it will have all the info u need its a good read

You will find buying a yearling pair and growing them out into adulthood is much more rewarding plus you will learn in this time to care for them correctly before you breed them. I personally dont see a problem buying both from the same breeder but thats up to you and whats available at the time. Caring for gtps is all in the book mentioned above.

Also Waterats fact sheet has great advice

I didn't find them that much harder then a carpet, I only had a jungle for a yr and bought a green as a baby which is now 2 yrs old, once you get the tub/enclosure set up correctly there a breeze and a real pleasure to keep, defiantly recommend the more complete chondro book, it's like a bible to Gtp owners.

Thanks all, I'm the beardie lover...slowly being converted with snakes by hubby.

His carpet is about 8yrs old and he raised her from a hatchling so I'm sure the general care of the snake is not a problem, the other little python has been with us for a year or so now and was to get me used to our big girl ;) (can actually feed her and will hold her while he cleans the tank out now so seems to have worked).

As I said, we are in no hurry to breed them but would like to at some stage and hence the questions about ensuring best stock to start with.

Hubby's birthday is coming up in a couple of months and would love to be able to give him the GT's as a present (with the recommended book).

Definitely get the book chondros mentioned! It answers every question you could ever ask!

Defintly get them as a hatchie there is nothing more fun than watching the otogenic colour change and they are also a little bit cheaper. You probably wont stop at one aswell. There are also some quality
GTP breeders on this site.

Tough one to answer! I started out with an adult pair and that worked for me. Ultimately once they are old enough to sex they should be powering along nicely so you can get a small pair and grow them up which is a great experience. Either way you are going to fall in love with these amazing pythons :) just make sure you get strong healthy animals.

There are few questions you need to think about first

If you enjoy handling your snakes dont buy hatchies chondros as they can be very fragile when compared to other morelia
The change is great to watch but most yearlings wont have changed yet
Hatchies can be difficult to sex properly and with complete certainty
So yearlings or older may save you buying 2 females or males by accident

There are many imports in Aus with some quite interesting colours etc
If you like these ones try to stick with say Sorong Wamena or Biak or any other single variety
Mixing and matching is ok
But pure locales will become more popular in future
Anything they call mite phase is originally a high altitude animal

As mentioned above
Look on the internet to find a breeder
Lots of top ones on here
But before you buy spend a couple of hundred on a plane trip and actually see the chondros you are getting
That way you can 'feel' if they are the right ones

The more complete chondros is a great book.
Roughly speaking, green tree pythons are an easy species to take care of as long as you take in 2 extra aspects of their captive care (Humidity and Perches) then your good to go.

I got my first GTP from Michael Cermak (waterrat). It was a hatchy native.
Great animal, strong feeder and really placid. Natives are great in my opinion as a first GTP.
It will be sexed once it has a bit more size.

My second was a 9 month old bred by Ryan (Greenmad). Unlike the natives they are much bigger in size
Some can be snappy but it differs. I had it sexed by another local GTP breeder Baden (solar 17) yesterday and it turned out to be a female.

I am about to get another GTP from Craig (GreatSnakes) which is a mix locale, 20 month old male.
I am really looking forward to receiving it :D

Will definitely be seeing before forking over $$'s for them, they are by no means a cheap pet and have made that mistake once already when an expensive reptile has arrived and NEVER been anywhere close to its picture :(

Mite phase? Higher altitude animal??

D3pro all of those GTP's are beautiful! did you add the pics in order of who you got them off? Also, what is that unusual coloured snake you have as your avatar?

I doubt we will ever stop adding to our collection and have given up saying to each other we don't need anymore animals to look after! Definitely not going to say we will stop at two GTP's but we will start there..... ;)
