Wow, my thread on spiders got a reply :D :D :D :D

Thanks everyone for the interest, and who would think, i only got one 'weirdo' this time! LOL

To answer some questions:

pete, yes there are 42 members now, good for a site that's only been going for a week or so. I'm really excited as it's about Australian tarantulas too, so many discussion forums are about American tarantulas, so it's great having other Australian enthusiasts to talk to.

Pinx and Lib, thanks for joining, and thanks everyone for having a look. Tarantulas are something I'm really passionate about, they are so very interesting.

Sdaji, I do breed a few species of Australian Tarantulas (like herps, exotic tarantulas are illegal). I breed Phlogiellus sp., have 2 gravid females currently, Selenocosmia stirilingi, Selenocosmia crassipes and hopefullly some others when I can track down some males. It's very hard to get males from the exact same species, so you need to be careful to make sure it's the right one, and has been collected in the same area as the female.

Female S.crassipes, next biggest female I own:

I want them but my wife wont let me get them .
Any thoughts on how to turn her around ?

Oooh, I'm sorry. YOu wouldn't believe how many men, pay for a spider, and the day I am going to send it, their partner rings me up and demands that I don't send it. LOL, I've had to return their money many times. I don't have any ideas, sorry. My husband took 3 years to come around, and it helped that I bought him his own python, took the focus off our growing family of spiders, and he didn't really notice when I got more after a while. If it helps, he said hell would freeze over before he would ever allow me to keep spiders as pets, and usually he NEVER backs down. I think he now just realizes they are lovely and interesting, and their personalities are quite docile. Have a look at my webpage if you want, it's in my signature, has a few stories about my own spiders.

Thankyou :D Most people don't think they're as good as the overseas ones, but I love them!!

I feed them crickets and mealies, but around breeding season, I give them pinkies to prep them for egg laying. In general, they have 2-4 pinkies a year. Some people give them bigger, but they only take live prey, and it's kinda cruel giving them older mice, not to mention very dangerous for the spider. Inverts should make up the bulk of their diet though.

Nome, (or anyone else). I have pictures of some really freaky looking spiders from Iraq, really far out! I tried to stick them in my gallery but they're .bmp, the site won't take them and for some reason I can't convert them to jpg.

The only information (or misinformation?) I have on them is:

They run 10 mph, jump three feet, are a nocturnal spider, so only come

out

at night unless they are in shade. When they bite you, you are injected

with

Novocaine so you go numb instantly. You don't even know you are bitten

when

you are sleeping, so you wake up with part of your leg or arm missing

because it has been gnawing on it all night long.

If you are walking around and you bump something that is casting a

shadow

over it, and the sun makes contact with it, you better run. It will

instantly run for your shadow, and scream the whole time it is chasing

you.

PS. The one on the bottom is eating the one on the top. These are

Spiders

found daily in IRAQ by our troops. Imagine waking up and seeing one of

these

bastards in your tent!!

*****
Yeah, sounds like a load of crap, but they are still the freakiest looking spiders I've ever seen. Can I email the pic to someone who can convert it to jpg so I can stick it up on the site?

LOL, this is another urban myth. The spider in question is a camel spider, or sun spider. Whilst they would give a nasty bite, the chewing of people's arms and legs bit isn't true, as is them chasing people. They are only as agressive as your average tarantula. the pic you have seen makes them look alot bigger than they actually are. They are apparently not even venomous. Here's a link to the pic, and scroll down to read the real story.

Some people overseas keep these as pets, while they aren't my cup of tea, it's still sad that they are being used for stories like these, much like our pythons breeding with inland taipan stories

camel spiders are scropians.
Well, they aren't a scorpion, but also not really a spider, they are Solfugids. They belong to the class Arachnida, but lack venom or silk glands. :)
They actually prey on scorpions and spiders.

ah cool, i read somewhere once that were actually scropians not spiders....pretty cool lookin animals either way i reckon. :)

Yeah, LOL, i heard they were spiders and surprised to see they weren't too. LOL, I've seen a pic of someone holding a pet one, that's brave I reckon. there is no way I'd do that, one wrong move and those jaws would take a nice bit of flesh off I reckon

YAY!
i joined your site 2 nome!
thanx for letting me know about it, did you create the forum?
Would you mind if i gave the web address out to a pet shop that sells them?

Hey Bry!!
Yay, it would be good to have you there. No, it's not my forum, nor did I create it, just a friend of mine I met through tarantulas called Gethin made it. He's as passionate about "Australian Tarantulas as I am, and he decided to start a forum. His website has been around for a while, it's dedicated to his pet tarantulas.

:D
