Hi all,

We have recently found someone who is selling GTF's in Melbourne, she is selling us 4 young frogs and is posting them up to us on the Gold Coast via express post after our import permit arrives.

Question is, we are new to this. We've always adored amphibians and snakes and now have the chance to finally begin by having some of our own.

Where did you start off with your frog families>? How easy is it to begin? Its quite nerve wracking as we dont want to harm them by us not knowing how to care for them properly! Ive been reading through past posts and have come across some great informative reading.

Just looking for personal experiences!! Any fellow froggy lovers care to share stories? Helpful hints? Do's and donts?

Thanks so much in advance for your replies......

Crazywhiteboys.... Girlfriend!!!:)

I keep a few species of frog and love them all. They are pretty easy to keep. I keep some in 2 foot tanks with a couple of inches of water in the bottom and a heater in it keeping it at about 30 degrees, I keep a uv light on all my frogs with live plants and plenty of climbing space for them.

Thanks guys, Ill be sure to read through the links. I cant wait to get them! Im amazed the lady is sending them by post! I didnt think they would survive a journey via mail!!

We are off to research a UV light and a heater tomorrow... Will the plants that you buy in a pet store for fish be ok for frogs?

Guess its all trial and error cept I hope there will be no errors!!

You guys have been wonderful!!

Jess

As long as they are submerged yes. But you would be better off trying flowerpower for something that can live in water but grows outside it aswell.

Just letting you know that it is illegal, cruel and life threatening to the frogs to send them in the mail.

meshe1969 Thanks for your comment. :?

I realise this, but have been assured this kind of transfer through many questions to breeder and seller of these frogs, that although it may seem "llegal, cruel and life threatening to the frogs" They always arrive safe and unharmed. This kind of transfer happens all the time so I hear.

Ive heard of a few people who send frogs through Express post and have talked to a friend who works at an AWL as a vet, they say as long as it is next day delivery and they are "packadged accordingly" (Sounds bad I know) there will be no harm done.

I know there are mixed views on this topic and can see it from both perspectives, Ive been assured they will be fine and that it isnt inhumane so therefore I will hope they will arrive safe and sound. But again thanks for your input.

I have bought roaches by express post and nothing went wrong, cant see why they would be any worse with frogs.
I think it would be interesting to compare the problems freighting animals with express post vs AAE legal issues aside i dont think they would be that differant.

I get roaches and crickets through post all the time, I got 2500 today as a matter of fact and they are fine, I have also gotten frogs that way and never had a dead one.

Apples and Oranges.

Roaches aren't amphibians, they don't need water and they aren't as sensitive. Plus, you get a couple of thousand roaches at a time by mail, a dead one or two mean nothing.

I'm sure the risks of sending frogs through the mail can be minimised, but i'd still be cautious.

You can't label the box live animals, just try and imagine how the box will be thrown around. with roaches and crickets (which is legal to send) can be labeled and have sufficient air holes. and then even if they are thrown around a bit they can cope better.
I would never condone sending a snake or lizard with Aus Post, but I would think they would cope better than frogs. The ARC send crickets and frogs via aus post but would never send frogs with them.

Again point taken... Frogs arrived today, labelled...... FRAGILE. They were perfectly fine and are absolutley in the best shape. I had no problems and was told I wouldnt.

I know it was a risk, but I can say, they have arrived on the Gold Coast from Victoria in tip top condition, they were sent yesterday.

This lady is a licenced breeder of GTF's and other frogs and this is the only way she gets her "offspring" around the country.

Apples and Oranges..... These GTF's are fine and Im happy that they are.

Kind regards and again thank you to all that have helped me begin my froggy journey!

Jess ;)
