Non Toxic Paint/Varnish

I have just finished building a lid for a tank I have at home and was wondering what I should use to coat it i.e paint or varnish etc. Also, what would people recommend as being non toxic to reptiles.

water based is best... if you stain it first or whatever, then seal it with waterbased varnish, otherwise you will be waiting for ages for the smell to go away

I stain the timber then use cabothane as a high gloss seal. Looks good, easy to apply and usable within a day if warm.

Once is dries it provides an extremely servicable finish. They say you need 3 coats, a day apart, to get the glassy high grade finish which tallies with my experience. The finish is excellent though.

with cabothane two coats about an hour apart gives a good finish. But for a great finsh do a light sand the next day and an addtional coat
