ok so i bought this olive python that's feeding on quales/finches and yes i no probs not a good idea don't need a lecture ......... just wanted to no what we all think about force feeding????? i assume not a good idea as it would end up causing more problems ????

ive never had to do it...all my olives take anything i put in front of them....i feed rabbits to my big olive male and i feed small adult rats to my 2 yr old female olive....never used finches or quales on any of my snakes.......
if your snake isnt eating check temperatures first before doing anything else....temp should be around 32 degrees at warm end....

hard to get them off poultry...it's their chocolate. probably easiest to find yourself a good poultry seller :)

yer iv been keeping olives for the last 2 or 3 years and iv never had one witch was such a pain in the *** grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

im gona get it feeding on rats if it kills me got any ideas to make the transition any easier ??????

What have you tried so far mpeel?

thaw out the bird in warm water, then put a washed rat in the bird water and feed it out. After a while by using less scent you may be ok.

I assumed that was the case. How have you offered them? Have you tried any scenting methods etc?

i haven't tried the warm water one but iv tried live rats and scenting dead rats and mice just by rubbing them with birds

Use a small bird and then push in some rats behind it. that or tie some feathers to the rodent

ok iv heard that one wat do i tie them with?????

You can use that "cooking string" stuff. Personally i would try heavily scented rodents, maybe with some feathers in the mouth first. Rub the bird all over the rat and stuff some feathers in it's mouth and it should work okay. Once/if it accepts that next time try less scenting etc etc.

dampen the rat then the feathers will stick to the damp areas, I think string would cause problems

There are many types of trickery you can try. Best to give some of these options a run before you decide to assist feed. The key is to be patient and persistent. You can use rodent body parts pack them in the mouth of the bird and vice versa if scent rubbing isn't working. Good luck.

cheers all will give them a try !!!!!!!!!! if u have any more ideas just chuck them up and ill see how it goes :)

I received advice that there is no reason why they can't live a diet of quail. Why fret if they don't eat anything else? Least they are eating.

its more convenience than anything all my mates breed rats if it dosent feed on rats it means trips into the city witch take a good hour when i could just walk up the street and grab a rat and the whole thing of salmonella pinioning its just easier if i get it onto rats

Hey Max!! Good to see alls going well..poor thing;)...Maybe you should try a little more time and patience as you have only had the Olive just over a week!!
Hmm...maybe we could have saved all of that frustration by buying one of the rat eaters instead...tut the choice
was yours...have fun.... l still have 10 still eating quail (l did have 11 but you bought one)...but l actually did read and agree with others here...... that quails are just fine, supposedly they are more nutritious in a protein sorta way;)
Its time will come.....
You take it easy Max and practice that deep breathing:)
Regards

And hey l suppose if you want to floss you snake after eating...strings a great idea!!

Let it get hungry , no food for a few weeks . Poke a knife into a rats skull to expose the brains [ mmmm brains ] stick a few feathers into the brain so it looks like a crest . lt should go for it , lf not at least take a pic of the crested rat and post it .
