While we're on the subject of wild animals as pets, a friend from Taronga e-mailed me this pictures yesterday - the latest pet craze in Nigeria.

As far as I know, domestic cats have a flap of skin in their throats that resonates when it vibrates causing the purr. This is lacking in the big cats which is why the sound they make is more a cough than a proper purr. Someone has to have done a web page on it! I do know that cheetahs & siamese cats are the only cats that cant retract their claws. Personally, as far as exotic pets go, I kinda prefer the hyena. I also desperately want a Lappet-Faced vulture... ugly little suckers!

Ah yes, one wonders at the temperament of the one that needs to be muzzled.....

Big cats can purr, but only when they exhale. The other felids can purr when they inhale aswell. And siamese sgould be able to retract their claws. Cheetahs are the only species that cannot (hence the genus Acinonyx).

And as for Vultures - you can't go past a Sth American King Vulture!

That guy will one day lose his marbles, get on a train and get lost, forget who he is etc. And then the authorities will shoot the croc because it is a 'rogue, killer croc' and open it up expecting to find the old guy inside.

Or I am just being cynical?
