Try and get a pump that flows through about 5 times the water volume of the pond each hour. I guess it depends though on how many turtles you will have. They really are very messy. I got a 1200L/h pond pump for $30 at bunnings. I have just been filtering the water for a few weeks without anything in the pond so I dont really i know yet how it will cope when my turtle is actually in there. I decided im not gonna put him in til the weather warms up.

I was also able to buy the filter for $100 although all it is is a few layers of foam and a heap of bio balls. You may be able to make something cheaper but I guess I was too lazy, and by the time I bought all the materials, drum, etc...the price didnt seem to be much different.

If you make your own filter you can buy something called zeonite which could work as your biological filtration, its about $20 from the hardware for a small bag of it. You just put it in a mesh bag and put it in with the filter.

If I was to do anything different I would have bought a 8ft tank right at the beginning. My turtle is only about 18months old and seems cramped in his 4ft tank. Although I think he has grown too fast due to family members feeding him behind my back, I have put my foot down now though, as far as I know it doesnt happen anymore.

good to see you doing the work aswell

yep yep yep... i just love getting dirty.. hehehe

cheers turtle hermit... but i have decided (with the help on instar hehehe) to not put turtles in there... i've been told its to small.. so i think i'll get some eastern water dragons instead... and build a bigger n better place for some turtles... cheers everyone for all your help.. i'll have to remember about this thread when i finally do get some turtles and a place to put them..

The filter in our turtle pond is an old large plastic flower pot, filled with scoria (a cheaper alternative to bio balls but it works the same way) and shade cloth as a pre filter. The pump sucks the water from the middle of the scoria and nature cleans up the water on the way through.

LOL Trader!!! No half measures eh? Megans head will, like, explode !! :D
LOl Megan, good choice, Ewd are terric little lizards, mine few months old, about 20cm tl
There my first so I dont know how old folk reccomend before putting outside, but little lizards could be easy to lose, unless you had shadecloth tight all over. That would block the sun and ruin everything. Why not see if you can find a nice adult pair to house in it ? as I said its perfect for them!
Then you experience the joys of little lizards appearing down the track, perhaps eventhis spring!
Adults are fantastic looking, Males have bold red undersides!
Can someone post a pic?
Lotsa time now for building a nice big pond.
A four foot pond will house two turtle hatchys for 18 mts at normal growth rate, then you can watch them grow while you build . :D
