I just got home from being away for 4 days, and noticed my Stimson python has very cloudy eye's. It is fully grown and i have had him for roughly 6 weeks he was fed 2 weeks ago the temp is 25 degrees in his enclouser the humidity is 80 percent and is heated with a red heat lamp. I left the uv lights on 24 hours a day while i was away also there is no reptile vets where i live. Please help!

He is comming up to a slough (shed) and your temps are to cold, It should have a hot end of 32dg, They dont require uv either, it is usually a sales pitch from pet stores to sell you more equipment.

He's shedding. His eyes will clear, he might get cranky, probably won't take food, and then he'll shed. Nothing to worry about. Mist him once a day over the next week to help him shed cleanly.

80% humidity is too high , as others have said its just coming up to a shed.

Thanks very much. i was abit worried about it and was thinking about taking him to the vet. We have never exprienced a snake shed before as we are only new with reptiles.

How i decrease the humidity? do i put a small water dish in to lower it? the water dish is directly underneath the water dish. should i put the water dish the other other side of the enclosure?

and if you are going to give it UV, 12 hours a day will easily suffice. they dont need it, but have evolved with it in their natural environment and it wont hurt them. the choice is yours as to wether you want to spend the money. I personally do use UV where possible

I think you're asking if you should replace your water dish with a smaller one in order to lower humidity? That would work, yeah. Otherwise, if your water dish is close to the heat lamp, I'd recommend moving it to a cooler spot: that way the water doesn't evaporate and cause increased humidity.

thanks i have moved the water dish to the other side of the enclosuer and the humidity is now 68

really, humidity between 15 and 40% would be what i would be aiming for except at shedding time where a couple of mists a day from a spray bottle will do. the more humidity in an enclosure, the increased risk of turning your enclosure into an agar dish. move the water bowl into the coolest possible place. if possible, you might need to create more ventilation if you have already got it in the coolest place. or downsize the water dish.
another alternative is to put a fake plant right beside the water dish, between it and the heat source, with enough foliage to block out most of the direct heat. this will make the enclosure look better and help with humidity. i use this method in one of my enclosures with great effect. (obviously wont work if using a heat mat.)

humidity is still a little high, and if you don't get the temps raised to the recommended 32 you could risk a respitory infection (vet trip)

if the humidity doesn't decrease any lower that 68 you may need to look at putting extra ventilation in,

can you post a pic , then the advise can be a little bit more specific.

Is there a heat gradient in the enclosure?

We all have to learn at some stage I guess. The system would be improved if first time licesnes holders had to pass a basic husbandry and basic reptile knowlege (ie signs of slough, feeding etc) assesment, before being issued their license.
Or perhaps attend a simple keepers lecture.... JMO

Totally agree with your suggestions re: improving the licensing system

I was the same as you Mel and been flamed for it in the past.... I'm a research then acquire kind of guy.
Unfortunately people buy reptiles like they buy goldfish. Some even house them as such. Sometimes the people or staff selling them
don't know enough to help them get set up in the first place. As the hobby gets bigger there will me more people who aren't as interested in
husbandry as much as they are interested in having a "wow you have a snake" novelty.
We all keep for different reasons... But as you say that shouldn't come at the expense of the animals. Luckily we have forums where people can get better
advise and help. No one want to see their pet die.....

It is a wonder that there are any questions posted on this site at all, Courtney yes is new to reptiles and Is asking for help not to be scolded Melissa. Courtney just listen to the positives reject the negative comments.

And Melissa I am sorry to go on about it but nothing is more frustrating than somebody trying to get some advice and having someone else come down on them, lighten up.

+1, I absolutely agree.

My concern here is that yes I agree with the Licence testing and the researching an animal, but the mistake has been made and it will be made everyday till the time the system is changed. But if everytime a newbie has a concern and ask advice on here or any other forum then when the next problem occurs and it will, they will not seek advice therefore in the long run the animal will suffer.

Agreed..
I guess the best thing to do is not overly-criticise so as not to scare them off when they're in need of good advice. +1
