Last year we had a python classic. My boss keeps all sorts of finches as a hobby. After a while he discovered that some of them were disappearing.
Checking the cage for any holes did not result in anything. The next time he put some food in the food dishes he watched his little birds get down to the fresh seed. And as one of his prized finches was having a feed, out of the grassy substrate a python lashed out and strangled the life out of his beautifull finch. With realisation hitting a few seconds later he decided to let the snake eat the finch, and after the feeding we got the carpet snake out of the cage. She was only a baby about two foot long. We were pretty sure she was responsable for the disappearance of 8 finches in a period of two weeks. After she'd eaten one she couldn't get out of the bird cage because of the lumps, so she decided to live next to the food dish. After this incident the cage was snake proofed( the snake got in through a 12 mm gap in vertical bars) You always hear about snakes getting stuck in cages and this was the proof.
