I happened to catch my snake going 'to the bathroom' just after I'd cleaned out the tank, and I swear I saw hemipene protruding while the snake was doing its business. Does this usually happen??? The snake wasn't sexed before I got it, and it had been referred to as a female... but looks like its not :lol:

If they are really straining, the hemipenes can pop out. I once had a wrestling match with a male Darwin who seemed determined to relieve himself on me and I was equally determined to hold his tail away from my body. That led to some eversion and even a speck or two of blood in the droppings. No problem in the end and he went on to service my female very enthusiastically.

Tahlia, it could also be bit of an inverted bowel. Sometimes it looks like the snake is prolapsing when crapping but it slides back in again.

Are you sure you didn't just see the skin of the cloaca? Maybe consider having the snake sexed to be sure.

I saw that as well, I wondered if the snake was prolapsing, but its fine now. I definitely saw two separate things come out. Thanks for the quick reply :)

Then it looks like you have got one horny male. :D

lol :D I got him from a pet shop, they saved him from dying after his previous owner starved him. I've had him for almost a year, and I thought he was female... this will take a while to get used to

Don't you just hate that when it happens?are you sure he is not cross dressing?hahahahaha.sorry Tahlia.

Hahaha :) he acts like a princess with his food, he sniffs for half an hour sometimes before eating, and then when he's finished he wipes his mouth. He's a girly boy! The other day I had a rat that I offered him, I was holding it in tongs and I pressed it up against his mouth and he still wouldn't bite it

It annoyed me that I'd just cleaned out his tank and then he goes back in there and about 2 minutes later he craps in there. You'd think somebody's great dane did it!

I just came across this thread after I experienced witnessing the exact same thing about 5 minutes ago! I thought it was the cloaca at first, but then there were 2 of them, located at near the top of either side of the cloaca, and they protruded almost a cm. I was just about to post my own thread about it. I did manage to get some photos, though I missed when they were really obvious. The photos are pretty graphic though (close up of pooping), so perhaps I won't post them. But I'm going to presume that they were in fact hemipenes?

You are a superstar for using the search function 5 stars! *****

Hemi-penes are pretty grotty looking things, kinda look like an AHG's tail (like a little bit prickly) but more pink and more grotty.

Yay! Do I get a gold star? Now the spikes, they are only towards the end of the hemipenes aren't they? What I saw didn't protrude too far out, but I gathered they must be the hemipenes because there were 2 of them on either side of the cloaca. They were very pink. I mean I could post a photo, but the pictures are pretty graphic, with all the poop and cloaca.

Hmmmm i think gold is going a bit far, afterall you did have to ask the question. Silver star for you.

I recon just post the pics, it's all in the name of education! Even Youtube allows nudity if it is educational.

Yeah, post the pics, it won't hurt. It could help people later on if they see the same thing, it could stop them from doing a panic and thinking something is terribly wrong with their snake :)

Well there is something pretty wrong with these snakes, they're getting a stiffy over taking a dump! That's just gross!

I noticed the same thing the other day with my male bredli. He always hides so never moves around unless I get him out to handle him. As a result of that he doesn't work the poo through quickly. To get him to poo I have to give him a bath to encourage it to happen. It's a pain as it makes a hell of a mess lol. But it works.

Okay I'll see if I can get them up, none of them are great photos, I missed getting a photo of when they were really sticking out, but you can still see enough to know what I'm talking about. If my internet decides it likes me today that is...

I don't envy you having to do that, it does make a horrible mess... at least it doesn't smell as bad as cat poo though  I'm glad I'm not the only one who's seen this happen, I searched the forum before posting the thread couldn't find anything. The good thing about it is you won't have to get your snake probed if you intend to breed. It tokk a while to get used to though, I'd had him for about 10 months and thought he was female. Embarrassing...

Do you think perhaps straining could cause them to protrude? His cloaca was also protruding quite a bit when he was going today.
