Hello Everyone

I went to my local Pet Store today to have a look at some heat mats and other accessories to setup a click clack, I told the lady what i wanted the heat mat for and she told me that i should not use a heat mat for plastic tubs only use them for glass :?
I told her that ive heard of alot of people using heat mats for plastic tubs, and i asked her if you use a blanket in between the tub and the mat if that would be ok and she said she could only tell me that they are only for glass, which apparently is on the box of the heat mat as a warning.(its exo terra brand)

She has freaked me out now, saying that the tub will burn if i use a heat mat. I have read alot of threads here on click clacks and isnt it what everyone does???

ALSO... does anyone NOT use a thermostat in their click clack? They sell thermometers which i can latch on the outside of the tub and the probe part inside the tub to read the temps, would this be ok to do if i check it all the time ??

I havent bought the tub yet, the ones at bunnings seemed a bit dodgy because the lids didnt sit very well. Who sells the systema ones?

Sorry for my NooBness lol Thanks for reading !

Think about it.If the mat will melt plastic it must get really hot.Hot enough to kill whatever is in the tub.Even if used for a glass tank then it would still get hot enough to kill whats in that tank.

Thermostats are good insurance to protect from over heating as is using a small wattage mat that will only get to a certain temp. With lower wattage mats though you need to keep the room they are in relatively warm for them to achieve the desired temps.

kmart sell teh sistema ones,..

i think shes talking about the stick on mats, not the normal heat mats.

i use a thermostat, its really not that expensive considereing u can use them with so many things once the snake moves into a bigger home,..i still check my temps regularly with a temp gun though,....my little heat mat got up to the mid 40s by the morning,..and thats using a thermostat.

maybe the pic will help,....the heat mats the green thing under the tub,...

Well I have a bredli hatchling born in Jan and I bought her in Feb so have had her for that long now in a plastic tub with a 10w heat mat under one end on 24/7 with no thermostat. The tub is high, its not the small flatter ones some use, and there are plenty of air holes. She also has a small branch in there to get up off the bottom as well. She is on top of a chest of drawers, there is a towel over the timber drawers then the heat mat on the towel then her tub. As it is the middle of winter I am not worrying too much about it getting too hot, come summer however (and if I were to go away) I would hook up a thermostat. Having said that I do check the mat frequently to make sure all ok.

wrong mat, you cant use the one ur looking at with plastic tubs.

look at teh heating section on www.herpshop.com.au and you'll see the ones u need. :)

i'm using the smallest one under teh click clack, it cost $30ish from teh petshop.
