One of my rats bit me on the finger what should i do ? What kind of First Aid...

First of all I would gas the rat and then just wash it with dettol or betadine.

A lot of females that bite in my experience actually make GREAT mothers IMO ... solar 17

That is an interesting point that you have there, I have only heard of the theory that you should kill off rats that bit because you do not want to pass on that trait. The second theory is only taking the interaction between people and rats and does not consider the interaction of the rat protecting her young.

This is the maternal instinct at work...good mums fiercely protecting their young :)

I had one rather visicous nasty one that took a good piece out of my finger .....she was destined for the freezer pronto

Along came my friend who saved her from my plans and when her young were weaned took her home and made the best sweetest pet our of her.

It's all to do with the female hormones so she said....LOL

As for first aid...make sure you clean it well with an antiseptic and I would recommend antibiotic ointment. I had a bite from a rat get severely infected once...trust me, it's not something I would want to repeat. If you have redness and swelling that lasts or begin running a fever, go to the doctor. I waited a couple of days to long and paid for it.

Point to the offending rat then point to the freezer.
Now hold up a frozen rat & say in a stern but forgiving voice, "Next time..."

Rats that don't savage human fingers can be just as good, and better, mums. Those qualities are by no means linked or mutually exclusive. Rats can do some incredible damage when they want to. A lady in one of my Facebook groups had to have two operations and nearly lost her finger. Another friend had to have stitches up her wrist that looks like a botched suicide attempt.

A mother rat guarding rat babies from people does not have any connection to quality of milk production and ability to raise and care for a fat healthy litter, nor is it helpful in any way when the litter is safe in a tub (well, as safe as they can be considered when being bred for reptile food LOL). Productive mothering can be selected for while culling out maternal aggression. People should always put their own safety first and cull aggressive rats, especially when they have children who may be interested.

I'm alive and well.... Lucky I didn't send the rat to the

Had babies that morning...

Might cull it if it bites when it's not preggers...
