get a dslr camera , might coast close to $1000 but its worth it , i used to take photos on my iPhone , but the detail on a dslr camera is insane :)

hehe i just got one myself. Its a Canon 650d, heaps to choose from but i just liked the canons. Just need to work out how to use it, it'd rather not leave it on 'auto' all the time. Got any tips for me? :)

i found a beginners course (2 hours a week for 8 weeks) was a great way to move away from the auto function,.....my camera is now fun not scary. :p

it was a community college, and the classes were at the local high school at night. :p

ive got a cannon 50d , biggest tip (although im pretty hopeless) get it OFF auto mode , i dont know if you will have the same problems as me but i was having a problem where every now and then it wouldn't take a picture and would just flash all these numbers up at me , it got really annoying as id have the perfect shot and the thing wouldn't bloody work it ended up being something to do with having it on auto mode and the light not being perfect for it , ive since turned it on to manual focus and whilst sometimes it may be a little blurry and could of been better lit but it always takes the shot

my teacher said to keep the focus setting on on the lens on auto, but set the camera to manual.
dont know if thats cos it was a beginners class or if thats the norm,....

i didnt even know that you could have the camera and the lens on different settings , mines on the lens (i think) maybe the auto setting on the camera controls things like light and shutter speed whilst the lens controls the focus and zoom i think mines set on manual all round though

spot on!

and i didnt know you could have camera and lens on different setting either,...my teacher thought i was a moron, lol,....

haha i usually have the camera on macro, and then set the lens to auto focus.. i think the lens i have is a 55-250mm, i seem to use that one a lot more than my other one which is (from memory) 15-55mm.. (no idea what the numbers actual means though, thats my next thing to work out, what the f. is and all the other mumbo jumbo after it lol)

Best advice I can give is to set the camera in manual everything and just start playing with the settings and start taking lots of pictures. You may end up with hundreds of crappy pictures but those are easy to get rid of now a days. Using the auto features really limits how fast you canget used to the camera. Also never use the auto setting on the lenses. It is really simple to manually focus the lenses and that way you can focus on the specfic point you want. Auto focus just focuses on what it thinks you want abd it also will not let you take a picture unless it is focused. I am also only new to this but th
at is the best advice i got from others that have been doing this for a while.
Cheers Cameron.

well that makes sense, i found it hard when the object was behind some follage and it would focus on the damn follage and not the object i wanted.. Looking forward to learning all about it.

Yer I hated that when I first got my camera. Auto focus lasted all of 30 minutes before I was over it, I turned if off and never used it since. Hardest part is just learning how to set up and adjust the manual settings for the different lighting and enviroments. After you start to get that it all becomes easier.
Cheers Cameron

Read a little on shutter speeds and iso settings and then play around with those.

Go onto the website www.worldofeos.com.au and join as a member. They have a whole heap of tutorials for using that canon camera as I have recently get one myself and used that website. They go through all the manual settings that you have on the camera and what they are used for and how they work with each other. And if that doesnt help too much you can always google what you want to learn.
I recently learnt how to use the complete manual setting to gets photos of fireworks.

Wicked, thankyou very much. Just in the process of signing up now :)

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it but shoot in RAW not jpeg. Google 'why shoot in RAW' for a far better explanation that I could ever give!
