Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it but shoot in RAW not jpeg. Google 'why shoot in RAW' for a far better explanation that I could ever give!

Thanks, i've been shooting in RAW + Jpeg, only because it was a pain because i couldnt view the raw image on my computer. Atleast with the jpeg there i can easily see which image i want to keep. Down side is it fills my memory card up pretty quick haha. I have a 32GB though so it does take a little while to fill up.

You should be able to view it and do post processing with the software that came with your 650D. Digital Photo Professional I think its called.
 
There is good book on nature photography by Ken Griffiths. While it is mainly aimed at film\slr users the principals remain for digital work. Well worth it trying to find it

If not go to the canon website and download the Canon RAW Codec Software.
