Hi all, is it legal in NSW to keep reptiles in schools on display? Because my schools wants some turtles, but i dont think its such a good idea...as some idiot will probably kill them

I know of one school over the border from here that has a hatchie carpet python. Had to send up some pinkies and velvet mice to them. That is in Vic. I don't think they will kill it. Cheers

Jimbo, I do school displays all over NSW. There are many schools who keep a few reptiles for the students to study. As long as they are licenced there should be no problems at all.

One high school in Wollongong that I visited last year had 2 seperate reptile pits in the middle of the quadrangle buildings and they were great setups. The students take turns looking after them and I think its a great idea.

ok thanks Cheryl and bigguy...i just think that some one might do something stupid to them, it probably wont though.

Yeah, I reckon they will have checked up on stuff re the keeping of Reptiles Jimbo. And besides its a great way for kids to learn about Reptiles as well. And surely they would have the relevant permits etc.

My school has bluies and a turtle. As long as the students are responsible and monitored, there shouldn't be a problem.

Do u need just a normal license to keep them in schools, or a special license?
The teacher that wants the turtles isnt very learned (is lernd pepi) in reptiles or fish as nearly all our fish have died..not that turtles are very hard to look after, but i dont think that they will have a proper filtration.

What a great idea. Educate before they become shuvel wielding maniacs.

I am all for having reptiles in schools.

I guess your going to have a few problems to stupidity (Being young) but overall that is a great way of educating people that reptiles are not evil slimey creatures.

It would create interest in the better part and hopfully many generations would lose the ignorence against reptiles. :)

I would even donated a few snakes out of my next clutch to a school willing to do such educational program for the kids. Provided they had the right conditions and would care for them in the right manner. :D

Hey playwell, what a great idea. And sorry I couldn't help you with da Bunnies. Did Animal Attraction help you?? Matt is a great guy, and willing to help at any time. Cheers Cheryl
