If you do try to involve the police, remember that there are jurisdictional issues. Until the NSWPOL and QPOL can agree on where/if the offense took place they will be reluctant to get involved so have a think about that before you make any approach.
Also, make sure you compile a brief of evidence, that will make the job of the police easier and they will be more likely to take action if the case looks tight and it's as simple as a door knock etc. Remember the more work THEY have to do to sure up the case, the less likely they are to get involved. If you can do all the leg work for them then it improves your chances.
It's actually relatively difficult (but not impossible) to create a false bank account so you should be able to track this guy down through the banks even if all the other details he provided are false. Unfortunately due to privacy legislation only law enforcement agencies can request that information. If the bank account is false that's an offense in itself so that would be another reason for the police to get involved.
