Children under five are at greater risk of catching salmonella

A two-month-old baby from Cheshire was treated in hospital after catching salmonella from a pet lizard. Health officers found the family from Widnes had two pet reptiles, a corn snake and a bearded dragon lizard, that carried the salmonella bacteria.
The baby has now been allowed home where he is recovering.
Halton Borough Council said reptiles were known carriers of salmonella and warned families to consider the dangers of keeping exotic pets.
Environmental health officer Stephen Burrows, from the council, said: "A child may pick up the bacteria from surfaces or household items that have become contaminated and then transfer it to their mouth."
Mr Burrows added people who keep reptiles should follow the guidance issued by the Department of Health in 2000 following the death of a three-week-old baby in Kent.
Children under five, in particular those under 12 months, pregnant women and the elderly are at an increased risk of infection because they have weaker immune systems.

obviously the parents are the key source ,as an infant this young ,isnt crawling around ,or even able to put something in his mouth to be contaminated ....lack of hygiene due to parents is the answer.

I have a paper on salmonella & reptiles, proving that more people catch it every year from dog, cats & UK hospitals than they do reptiles, i'll scan it when i find it & post it on here....but yeah agreed RBB, I'd be willing to put money on the fact its the parents lack of common sence thats at fault here....one reason why i cant understand people who let snakes and lizards crawl freely around their homes !
Hundreds of people catch salmonella every year, i guess the media latched on to this one because it was a young child..............great.....more ammo for the R.S.P.C.A.

Easy up geezer.... all the more reason to get your Visa in order, Australia is vastly different than the UK, we have things you have never seen before, like the sun.....

The best way to avoid getting any sort of infection is don't go to hospital for anything.
