HI, passing this around to as many frog owners as possable, please feel free to copy this info for other frog owners.
We have now received a complaint and photos from someone in VIC who is having problems with frogs bought from a VIC pet shop that obviously have "Redlynch" virus.
We know there are a lot more keepers out there who are having problems but if we don't hear from you, we can't help you and, even more importantly, we can't stop this thing from spreading. If "Redlynch" virus should get into the wild down there, your frog populations will be in serious trouble.
We need to hear from anyone who is having problems with frogs they have bought in the past two years and we need to know WHERE you got your animals from so we can clean up this problem. (You can email me privately if you don't want to publicise your sources.)
For example, with one batch of diseased frogs in SA, we have been able to track:
the frogs came from a shop in Adelaide
the shop got its stock from a breeder in SA
the breeder had bought some frogs from an individual in SE Qld who was selling diseased frogs collected from the wild but they said they were captive bred
the individual turned out to be operating illegally and the Q. authorities have been notified and will hopefully prosecute
By being able to track the problem, we can contact all parties so the problem can be fixed. Don't assume that your frogs are okay if they came from a local breeder or a frog club. Breeders may not realise their stock is contaminated or may not be using sufficient disinfection procedures.
We have photos and detailed information about "Redlynch" virus in our website: www.fdrproject.org/pages/disease/virusredlynch.htm
If you now have/have had any frogs with symptoms like those described in our site, please contact us.
Thanks,
Deborah
