Hi everyone

I was hoping you would be able to help us

we cant decide which snake water bowl to get...there are two sorts we are choosing from the exo terra 'natural look water bowl or a ceramic one with a blue lining.

I am favouring the ceramic one because I think it will keep the water cooler and be heavier and less prone to tipping...however the exo terra is lowhydrate-2-500.jpg to the ground

Just wondering what peoples experience thoughts are on these. I have included a picture below to show what I am talking about

All we use is ceramic baking dishes - alot cheaper than the proper reptile ones. We get them from Woollies, carzy clarkes, Big W etc.
As you know there is all different sizes out there - for a large rect dish ( approx 30cm x 20cm x 8cm high) we paid about $12 or so.
Plus there is small round ones that we use for the hatchies and we get them from Robyns kitchen...

A much cheaper alternative.

I guess it would depend on the look you are after, but I use the ceramic for most snakes.

I went down to IKEA and purchased plastic dog bowls for 50 cents each and they even provide an extra hide area as they have an area cut out on each side......ceramic is nice....until you drop it.....plastic is easy to clean but doesn't look so good.....we are all about economy and function...why spend money on looks when they all function the same way!

I prefer something that holds a reasonable amount of water, heavy enough not to be easily spilled, easy to clean and easy to see if clean. sometimes you can get a film on the inside of bowls thats very easy to see when the bowls are white.

I use the maxwell williams porcelain bowls that are available at most home ware stores. they are reasonably priced, good quality and easily cleaned. theres also larger round and square bowls available (not pictured) that are perfect for larger pythons.

Those bowls are perfect for young snakes and as Colin mentioned you can see when they are not clean. Cost effective too. :)

Ive had an idea actually thanks guys....ive got some big white ceramic baking dishes I wasnt using that I was going to get rid of they will be big enough for them to have a soak when they re going to have a shed.

thanks everyone....youve made me think laerally

We are using 10 or 12 litre plastic tubs, they hold enough water just in case my snakes want to go for a swim. Very stable as well.

this is what iam using and the little guy loves it

I have used the exo terra natural look bowl, and found that it became slimy very quickly and ended up discoloured, despite being thoroughly scrubbed out every 3-4 days. I have since changed to a ceramic baking dish from Coles and this has been much better and stays clean longer.

I also used the ceramic ones you have pictured and found that because the base is not glazed it would retain moisture after washing and would make the paper towel mouldy. Because of this I would recommend that what ever you use has a glazed base, like the ones Colin has pictured. They are easier to keep clean and cheap.

i was thinking the other day and had some spare new plastic pot plant bottoms that would be the same colour as a background im making any thoughts on them?

That's what I have in one of my enclosures. My diamond is a little big now but she still tries to curl up inside and ends up lifting it off the ground, very funny sight.

I've got a few of my wife's Kosta Boda bowls in some snake enclosures...it annoys her to bits but there is nothing she can do about retrieving them as they are in a couple of ven enclosures  I use them because they are heavy....and errr...because I haven't been bothered getting anything like you've shown above (which do look good incidentally :))

I have just started using the end bits for PVC pipe as suggest by some other members. Great for hatchies and juvies but i dont think they come large enough for bigger snakes. Cheap and easy to clean

We use these type as well. I find the reptile ones look the part but are not practical. We put the white ones in the dishwasher as well. Nothing sterilises better than that!

I use a large, melamine salad bowl, I think it was the Jamie Oliver brand but I can't find any pics on the web. Brown on the outside, blue on the inside, works great and only cost $12. Not sure you can still get them though as it was in a kitchen clearance store.

yep sounds like ceramic is the go

the ones I am using are pottery on the base not ceramic so I will have to wait and see how I do with the mould factor

they are large and not too deep...she hasnt gone swimming yet....but we will see
