So I've had this awesome little stimmy for about 6 months, and he'd be about 9 months old. I've got him in a fairly big (for his size) enclosure with a few bits and pieces for him to hide in/climb on. He's been eating regularly (except a couple weeks ago he refused for about a week but he's right now) and has shed 3 times. He has no worries shedding, so I'm getting a nice little collection of skins :D

The only thing I'm worried about is that he's been acting a little off lately. Most times he just chills in one of his hidey holes, but recently he's been crawling places he doesn't usually go (ie forcing his way through the substrate between his water dish/heat mat and the bottom of the enclosure), and quite obviously trying to get out. Now I say quite obviously because as I'm typing this, I'm watching him stretch up along the edge of the glass sliding door and try to force his way through.

Now, if I didn't know better, I would say he was bored...but I'm pretty sure the reptilian brain doesn't have the capacity for such abstract concepts as boredom. I would have thought the thought process of any reptile would be something along the lines of "Mate, feed, kill, repeat.". I mean I've never seen the reptile equivalent of a hamster wheel...but saying that I don't handle him as often as I could, either. Should I be doing this more often?

Anyone got an idea of what's going on here?

maybe there is some intresting smell in the room that he wants to check out.
maybe a mouse or rat smell, or any other poetentinaly edible cretter smell in the room.

Snakes are fairly curious they will try to get every where in their environment which is why they are such good escape artists, because they will at night constantly test every square corner of their tank. as long as he cant get out i wouldnt be worried he might be looking for a girl lol pacing is a mating time trend i believe.Im not a breeder but have several snake myself and have also noticed this behaviour alot

Ok no problems!

Glad to hear that this is pretty normal behavior. I'll keep an eye on this thread in case anyone has any other ideas.

Cheers :)

I don't know if it will help, but the snakes that I've had seem to get bored pretty quickly in their enclosures. I think it might be because I usually handle them a fair bit, so they get bored in their dull box of a house. I try to change around the things in my snakes enclosure every now and then. Move things around, take things out, add new things etc. Give them a little variety.

When mine start behaving like that its usually time to put them together.
