I am just a bit curious about what everyone uses for substrate for snakes?
What do you use?
How much does it cost/ size?
Pros/cons?
thanks

I use Aspen Snake Bedding over a layer of paper towel. Price is $4 for a 1 quart bag, $7 for a 4 quart bag, $12 for an 8 quart bag or $35 for a 24 quart bag. Advantages for me are that it is safe for reptiles, absorbent, odourless, light coloured (easy to spot pests or where it needs to be cleaned), easy to spot-clean or do a full replacement, and it suits the rest of my enclosure decor. If my enclosure was a click-clack, however, I would just use paper towel.
Only con I can think of is that it's dearer than newspaper or paper towel.

news paper
free i just grab a bunch of whatever newspaper is being offered for free
pros easy to clean
free
doesnt stink
gives the snake somthing to read befor bed :p

cons looks a bit plain

also i have used on occasion those fake grass mats

pros
looks good
easy to clean not as easy as news paper but still easy

cons
can be a bit costly
and has been said to cause irritation to the snakes underbelly.

and ofcourse neither can be ingested or get stuck to the snake.

newspaper.
my enclosures were built with floor size to exactly fit the SMH.
cost is a subscription to SMH, which i read every day.
It is safe and hygenic for the animals.
Healthy animals are more important than what looks good to a human.

News paper, paper towel and cardboard. As well as the advantages mentioned above its great for snakes to hide in and creates a nice insulated heated area if floor heating is used. If i want to setup an enclosure with a more natural look the paper can be cover in leaves, bark or whatever else.

Thanks for the replys.
In my click clacks i use papertowel with breeders choice over it.
And for my bredli i am using red desert sand. It looks ok but apparently it will dis-colour the snakes underside.
The EWD has repti brand bark, its costs a bit, but looks great.

2L click clacks i use paper towel , any thing bigger i use butchers paper .
I buy a whole bundle for around $30.00 , cut half of it into smaller pieces according to tub size , the other half i leave whole for my 41L tubs .
I have only brought one so far and it has lasted for ages , and i have a decent amount of tubs in use .
Saves me pinching all the neighbours papers too .

i use crashed and washed olive pips that i got from a local reptile shop in adelaide. thing is its the only place that sells the stuff. its call bradlys pet base its organic:), easy to clean:) and looks great:D. You just use it like kitty litter scope it out and just top it up when needed. you can see it in the pics of my enclosures in my profile page.

i use newspaper its free to get and its easy to clean. i work at a pet shop and i sell my customers there a sand based stuff called red desert sand or sahara sand its more for if you want something that looks a bit nicer than newspaper. i use it and its really simple to clean

As a kid I tried river sand, river pebbles and numerous other substrates but nothing proved better for maintaining consistant animal health than newspaper. It's not aestheticlly pleasing to look at but it provides keepers with a good monitoring medium for sanitation and parasite infestation.

I use gravell over newspaper in the pythons, non slip matting over newspaper in the elapids & sand for the lizards

News Paper for larger pythons. usually $1.10
Paper towel for the click clacks (pythons and elapids). few dollars a roll
News Paper for elapids. usually $1.10
Ozpet/sand for dragons. $40 for 20kg
Sand for monitors. white sand :$8 per 20 kg, red: $40 per 20kg.
Sand for gecko's. $8 per 20 kg
