Hi guys,
I?m just wondering if you can keep sugar gliders in NSW and where can I get some if you can, cheers.

Nope, only in Vic and SA,(possibly NT). I used to want to be able to keep these guys untill I saw them in the wild. I think it's wrong to confine them to a small aivery, especially after seen how much they travel around at night with such freedom.

No worries, thanks for the reply mate.

I have a pair of sugar gliders.... Their one of the best pets a person could ever have in my opinion. Pity their nocturnal and not diurnal :( cus their a hell of alot of fun!. Very active, very loving creatures. They occasionally glide from one corner of the room to the other. Its an amazing sight to see. I highly recommend them. Pity you cant keep them deano ... :(

Cheers. Lance.

I know it sucks, anyway what can you do. Have you bred your pair before Reptilia?

Nah, their only 6 months old at the moment. i hope they'll breed. That would be a challenge.

Yes and No.

If quality husbandry techniques, including quality staple foods and housing techniques can be worked out I would much rather see people keeping these very cute little guys than (insert favorite expletive(s) here &^%(*&%)(%)) cats. Think about it!

Apparently in a domestic situation one of their biggest enemies is the toilet which they seem to get into easily and drown... so guys and gals - remember to put that tiolet seat down when you have finished your business - it is bad feng shui to leave it up anyway.

just curious but what are the price tags on sugar gliders? if i remember correctly i think in vancouver they were pretty pricey

andrew

damn i started typing then got distracted and eventually came back so mrbredli has beaten me!

$250 each, $500 a pair of 3 months, $600 pair of yearlings.
I'm pretty sure 'pails for scales' sell them...

do you house them in big bird cage type things? also i remember a person i knew who worked at a pet shop said her's got really annoyed when it didn't get lots of attention, though she kept it by itself.

andrew

In america they've already got Albino sugar gliders in captivity. lol ! I heard (not sure if this is true). That America have more captive sugar gliders than in the whole wild population of australia. Their big in america!. Their are also company's that manufacture cages specifically for sugar gliders. Not aviaries. The prices in america are fairly low. You can get 1 for $50-100 us np. Not sure about Albino's. They've only just come onto the market in america.

They are social animals . Most pet shops that do sell them, sell them in pairs. The minimum requirements are a simple bird cage . say 24 inch square. Mine are in a 1200l by 1200 h 800d galvanised mesh enclosure with 2 doors for feeding.

hey Reptilia do you have any pictures....

A very long time ago, my sister found one that had been attacked by one of those cats herptrader was talking about.

We looked after it for a day or two before we could get it to wires. (can't remeber the exact details but we were given some info on how to look after it etc. and it envolved feeding it every couple of hours...

I remember we had it in the laundry and when you would come into check on it at night it would run up you and then jump of your head...classic.

It was very friendly for a wild animal. Unfortunatly it had brain damage from the attack (not from base jumping!) and was not able to be released...think it went to a zoo or something.

Nah mate, I got no pictures of any of my animals as I dont have a camera. But, when my sister gets back from America. I will use hers and send you some. Yeah, I'm guessing that one that was attacked by the cat was very young and obviously could'nt fend for itself. Without its mother. Therefore you had to give it a similar alternative to what its mother would give in the wild. Well done for looking after it... and yeah their crazy lil critters. If you bond with them from an early age you can teach your glider new tricks. For example gliding. Apparently their also quite fond of those run around rings like you would give to a pet mouse but much larger.

Cheers. Lance.

I have always thought of getting a pair one day. Cute little creatures. Then again, there probably isn't an animal that I don't want to get :)
