hi all, not sure if there has been a thread like this run before.... my house is being sprayed for spiders and for ants on thursday and i have an 11 month old python in my lounge room... we actually have to leave the house while they are doing it, so i was wondering what should we do with our python?? will she be ok in her tank?? im thinkin if we have to leave for an hour it probly isnt goin to be good for her??
thanks for any help :D

Hi,
Can you either take her with you or can you leave her at a friends house?
I definately wouldnt be leaving her in her cage ;)

I would take with you.
what they are spraying would become airborn and most likely end bad if she was left behind.

It's better if you take your snake somewhere else. I took mine to my mates house for a week. Just to be sure.

We have had the outside walls and under our house sprayed with poison for ants but not the inside because of our reptiles. They did not spray the whole way round as one corner was too close to our fish pond and was too large for them to lay a tarp over which is their normal practice.
I stayed inside with the herps and just had to shut all doors and windows while it was done.
Liquid baits where also put inside repeatedly over four weeks.
Ants are very hard to get rid of and we have not sprayed inside as I can't remove all the reptiles and the pest company don't recommend leaving any animal inside a house being sprayed.
I think we have ants in the ceiling but have no man hole access. The only way in is to take the iron roof sheets off or start taking down light fittings to spray through.
Just yesterday we had the pest company back to blow an ant dust into a wall cavity adjoining my reptile room by going through the holes behind the power points. We had to watch from the reptile side and let the poison guy know if we saw any powder get through any possible cracks so he could stop straight away.

Take your snake with you please. Empty her water bowl as the spray can settle in standing water so she could be poisoned from the water if you do not clean it out after the spraying.

could bring her to my place if u needed to..

doh just re read n saw it was today u were gettin it done... never mind :oops:

on a scale of 1-10, how bad is the problem? I ask because knowing that you won't get rid of either I wonder why you would bother going to such great lengths? Also in getting rid of your spider population, you will get an increase in mozzies and flies... good time of year for it too;). destroying all the ants around your house will increase the bacteria levels also. This is a broad question to all people who have their homes sprayed for ants and spiders, I couldn't do it unless they were plauge status. what do you guys think?

Well ren i dont spray the house.I like the ants they never hurt anyone and the spiders do their job.
Never spray unless you have too.If you do, i would take the snake to a friends house.

I tend to agree. Ants and spiders in moderation are fine by me. We have had ants in our house for many years and I hate using any kind of poison but the numbers just get larger. Our problem became a '10' when we keep getting swarms inside the lizard tanks eating a bowl of dead insects before the lizards can, swams inside the closed dishwasher before you finish filling it and losing large cricket colonies to them overnight.

i found two white tails in my 4 month olds bed clothes and a couple in my 2 yr olds room also. having being bitten by a white tail when i was 14 its an experience i do not want my children to go thru. My landlord has offered to get it done for us. i would rather have our snake stay with a friend for a week or so and reduce the risk of my children being bitten by a spider in their sleep. the ants arent too bad but the spiders.... im not willing to take the risk with my kids

so from someone who has actually been bitten by a white tail, what is the reaction?
on one hand i hear theres really bad skin necrosis, so i did some googling and it said that was an urban myth,..

im so paranoid about them, i can understand u getting the house sprayed to protect ur kids,..(but would also remove the snake for a week or so,...)

im really interested to know what the effects were for u, how painful, how long iot lasted and if there is scarring,..

sorry its a bit off topic, but people only ever know someone who is a freind of a friend of a friend who had to get their arm amputated,..(well, bit or an exaggeration there,... :p)

ive found 2 in my house in the last 3 months,....im freaking out!!

i was bitten by a little one on my right arm just near my armpit in the shower.... the bite itself didnt hurt but after about an hour my arm was hot and swollen, i had a bit of a temp and was feeling quite sick. after about two days, it looked like somebody had spilt battery acid on and around the bite site. it covered an area about the size of four fifty cent pieces. i was in a lot of pain, and stayed over night in the hospital. but the bite was fairly contained (in that it wasnt affecting my organs or anything else in my body, just my arm and it was makin me feel crook). the scar is still there (although over the years it has faded) but if i get too hot it gets really itchy and irritated (go figure)... i was lucky, i have seen some horrible reactions to spider bites.
i am taking our snake to my sister in laws for two weeks, i reckon it should be safe enough by then. we only have to stay away for an hour or so...:D

cool i'm glad you're doin that :) The offer still stands though. if ya get stuck for somewhere to take her :) bring her to her sister's for a visit haha :)

hahaha your so far away tho rach :) but thank u so much for the offer!! i gotta get out your way one of these days and catch up with you and the family its been way to long.
its gettin done next thursday and then on the ffriday we are getting our air condtioning put in YAY!!!! it gets so bloody hot in our house (whoever decided to put a black roof on needs to be kicked) my poor boys get so grumpy in the heat :(

wow, that sounds really nasty!!

thanks for .that info, good idea getting it sprayed!!

There was a thread earlier in the year about leaving reptiles in the house while its being sprayed. The pesticider had advised the householder the snakes would be fine but that turned out to be very innacurate. Owner ended up with very sick snake, I can't remember if it died or what, I am still trying to find the thread. Will link it if I find it.

Definitely take your little snake out while the house is being sprayed. The pest chemicals might be harmless to likes of dogs or cats, but can be quite dangerous to our reptiles.

thanks mysnakesau :) i thought as much, i definately dont want to risk losin our gal as she is a part of our family. i have organized somewhere for her to stay for two weeks and hopefully that will be sufficient. thanks for all your suggestions everybody :)
